Key Points

  • After a delay, Switch 2 preorders opened on April 24

  • The $450 MSRP was unaffected by Trump’s tariffs

  • Resellers have flipped them for up to $700, but most sales are closer to $600

Well, the day has come and gone. Nintendo finally opened their (significantly delayed) preorders for the Switch 2, and pretty much every gamer and reseller under the sun competed for a slot. Now that the dust has settled a bit, we’re beginning to see a market emerge for Switch 2 preorders. Unsurprisingly, they’re reselling for a profit. Things might not be as wild or as profitable as 2017, but this was an excellent flip for any reseller that got in fast enough.

Nintendo Switch 2 Preorder Overview

If you’re not a gamer, a reseller, or you just live under a rock, you might not have heard about the Switch 2. Nintendo officially revealed the console earlier this year, but it wasn’t until this month that we got some concrete information on Switch 2 pricing and preorder details.

Preorders were originally supposed to go live on April 9, but Nintendo delayed at the last minute because of the Trump administration’s tariffs. While the Switch 2’s launch price of $450 was unaffected, several peripherals and accessories received price bumps to cope with tariffs.

General preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 opened on April 24 in America. We covered all the preorder details in a comprehensive article here, but it’s worth noting that there were two distinct ways to preorder a Nintendo Switch 2.

Gamers who met certain criteria (registered Nintendo Online account and minimum playtime) were able to “register their interest” through Nintendo’s website prior to April 9. This put them at the top of the list for the first batch of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles when they launch in June, but the intense demand would not guarantee anyone a spot (more on this below.)

If you didn’t meet the criteria, it was still possible to place a conventional preorder through a participating retailer on April 24. GameStop, Best Buy, Walmart, and Target all had stock, and they all sold out predictably quickly.

Nintendo Switch 2 Preorders Resell

You know what else is predictable? When a sold out product resells for considerable profits, and that’s exactly what’s happening here. It’s hardly a surprise for anyone familiar with the Switch 2, or its predecessor’s heavily-scalped launch in 2017.

Right now, Nintendo Switch 2 preorders are reselling for upwards of $600. Frankly, this is on the low side of our estimates ahead of its launch, and tracks with consumer grievances over the high MSRP and Nintendo’s efforts to combat scalping.

Nintendo Switch 2 Preorder for Sale

Still, that pencils out to around $200 in profit depending on final sales numbers and fees. It’s by no means a bad flip, and the console’s popularity means resellers will have no trouble finding a buyer.

With the first batch of preorders officially sold out, we’ll have to see where the market for these might go. The Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, and there may be more consoles and more resellers joining the fun before then. Speaking of which…

Can You Still Preorder a Switch 2?

As of this publication, preorders for the Switch 2 are completely sold out through conventional retailers. However, you can still register your interest through Nintendo’s website.

It’s not clear how much stock has been allocated for this method, and it’s possible that there are still plenty of consoles that haven’t been claimed yet.

To be eligible, you must have a registered Nintendo Online account with at least 12 months of paid membership. Additionally, this account must have logged at least 50 hours of playtime on the Nintendo Switch prior to April 2.

If your account meets these requirements, you should register your interest through Nintendo’s site right now. Please note that the window for preferred registry has already closed, so any new registrations will be processed after the original registrants.

Nintendo Switch 2 Preorder Eligibility Requirement

Still, it’s worth attempting if you have an eligible account. Even if you aren’t able to receive a console on launch day, the popularity and relative scarcity of the Switch 2 means the consoles will likely resell for an extended period after launch.

In 2020, we saw PlayStation 5s and Xbox Series X consoles flip for months after launch, and the original Switch was notoriously hard to find even years after its launch. This is easy money for any reseller, so don’t skip the opportunity.
