McDonald’s sold 500 half-gallon jugs of their McRib sauce for $20
They sold out in minutes
Resellers have flipped them for up to $150
Have you heard? The McRib will be returning soon! Forget Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, spending time with your family; the real highlight of the holidays is stuffing your face with cheap processed rib meat. If you wanted to take some of that sweetness home with you, McDonald’s recently sold half gallons of their McRib sauce online. They didn’t last long though, and now resellers are hawking their jugs for five times what they retailed for.
You might’ve heard before that most of fast food boils down to sugar, fat, and salt. Smart eaters know that combining all of those elements into a single condiment can really speed things along.
McDonald’s McRib sauce is a great way to get those crucial food groups in one serving. The McRib will be returning to stores in December, but they’ve kicked things off by selling jugs of McRib sauce a la carte.
If you were quick, you could have bought a half gallon jug of McRib sauce through McDonalds’ “Whole Lotta Rib Sauce” website for $20. Just 500 were produced, and all of the proceeds were donated through McDonald’s Ronald McDonald House charities. All of the available stock was bought up in minutes.
Can you guess who was stocking up? If you said resellers, have a cookie. We can recognize an opportunity like this from a mile away, and these jugs were practically singing.
See, the McRib is a special thing. It only comes around on special occasions (i.e. when McD’s needs to bump quarterly profits), and people are attached to it. Consequently, the sauce is a thing of near-mystical value. Is it any wonder that McRib fanatics are willing to shell out for it?
Right now, half gallon jugs of McRib sauce are reselling for around $140 at a time. If you can limit yourself to just an ounce at a time, it comes out to just about $2 or so per sandwich. A prude investment for some, and a great flip for any reseller.
These came to upwards of $100 in profit per jug. That’s good enough for us, and these were a pretty easy buy. No bots, no queues, nothing complex; just a credit card and some cheap barbecue sauce.
