These were one of the most lucrative flips of 2023
Original Changeables from 1987-1990 currently sell for $60-70 per set of eight on eBay
Happy Meals currently cost $4-9 depending on location
McDonald’s recent retro releases like the McDonaldland souvenir tins and collector cups flipped for 3-5X retail within weeks
A McDonald’s employee just leaked what might be the biggest nostalgia play of 2026. Changeables are coming back. These These transforming food toys ran from 1987 to 1990 across three different series and became some of the most collectible Happy Meal toys ever made. Now they’re set to return January 27, marking the first time they’ve been available since the original run ended. This comes after a run of profitable retro releases that resellers feasted on, so mark your calendars for this release.
McDonald’s has been absolutely crushing it with adult-targeted nostalgia meals. The McDonaldland souvenir tins sold out instantly and flipped for double to triple retail. Their 2024 collector cups featuring Shrek and Grimace had people camping outside stores. These weren’t isolated incidents, they proved there’s massive demand for retro McDonald’s collectibles among millennials with disposable income.
The Changeables are arguably more iconic than either of those releases. They hit at the perfect intersection of ’80s nostalgia, Transformers culture, and McDonald’s collecting. Plus, the original toys are still actively traded 35 years later, proving sustained collector interest.
We don’t have any official confirmation on this release yet. The information comes from a photo leaked by a McDonald’s employee showcasing 16 new toys, with the promotion slated to run from January 27 to March 9.
These weren’t just any Happy Meal toys. They were basically unlicensed Transformers that turned McDonald’s menu items into robots and dinosaurs. The first two series featured McRobots with names like Galacta Pounder and Fry Force. The third series, McDino Changeables, transformed into dinosaurs with ridiculous names like Big Mac-O-Saurus Rex and Fry-Ceratops.
Vintage Changeables still move daily on eBay. Complete sets of eight toys regularly sell in the $60-70 range, with individual pieces going for $5-15 depending on condition. Toys still in original packaging fetch even more. The most sought-after pieces from the McDino Changeables series (the 1990 dinosaur wave) can hit $20-30 individually.
This is a volume game. Happy Meals cost around $4-6 depending on your location. Each meal gets you one toy. Based on previous McDonald’s releases, you’re looking at 8-10 different Changeables in the set.
Based on the month-plus release window, this probably won’t be a super-limited release. Allocations are typically on a store by store basis, meaning some locations will sell out before others.
Realistically speaking, this is probably a free lunch and not much more. Pick up a Happy Meal with these toys, maybe order something a little more substantial for yourself, and flip the Changeables to cover the bill. Unless production is unexpectedly constrained, these won’t resell for eyepopping profits. Still, be ready on release day, as promotional items like these can sell out faster than you might expect.
The official announcement should drop any day now. McDonald’s typically confirms these releases about a week before launch. Once confirmed, hit multiple locations on launch day, January 27. Not all stores will stock the same quantities, and urban locations tend to sell out faster.
Check your local McDonald’s app for any purchase limits. Some locations cap Happy Meal purchases during high-demand promotions. If you’re serious about volume, scout multiple stores in advance and have a route planned for launch day.
