Kurzgesagt sells limited edition pins a few times a year
Each design is $20 and available for 72 hours
“Strange Matter” pins sold last week and are flipping for around $50
Fans of Kurzgesagt’s animated videos were able to pick up super-limited “Strange Matter” pins last week. These are the most recent in a line of limited edition pins produced by the channel, and previous designs have flipped for up to $1,000. Resellers are already listing theirs for sale.
You might already be familiar with Kurzgesagt’s videos. The Germany-based indie YouTube channel has built a massive following in the last decade covering various science and sci-fi topics in a distinctive animated style.
Some of their most popular videos have racked up more than 30 million views, with their explanatory video on Covid-19 recording almost 90 million. The channel itself has 24 million subscribers as of this writing, and they’re currently recording and producing videos in nine different languages.
What you might not be familiar with is their merch. Kurzgesagt themselves estimates that around 65% of their income originates from viewers; either from merch sales, direct sponsorship through Patreon, or ad sales.
With millions of regular viewers, Kurzgesagt has built a pretty solid webstore with various bits of merch for sale. One of their most popular offerings is their line of limited edition pins. These first debuted in 2021, with each design only available for 72 hours.
Since then, Kurzgesagt has released 10 different pins divided into separate collections of three pins each. Most pins usually retail for around $20, and the most popular designs have resold for as much as $500.
The current collection is the “Ducktopia Labs Collection” that launched last year with the Determinator 3000 pin.
And the next pin in this collection dropped last week. Kurzgesagt viewers were able to pick up “Strange Matter” limited edition pins based on the “Strange Stars Explained” video.
These enamel pins feature a green liquid core that swirls and sloshes to simulate the matter referenced. Like other Kurzgesagt limited edition pins, these were only available for 72 hours.
Kurzgesagt sold the Strange Matter pin through their website for $18.90. Once the sale closed on May 9, no further preorders would be accepted and these pins were sold out, forever.
Now that the pins are unavailable for preorder, it didn’t take longer for resellers to begin listing their Strange Matter pins for sale online.
Right now, Kurzgesagt limited edition Strange Matter pins are reselling for around $50. Modest profits, sure, but it’s also worth noting that Kurzgesagt imposes pretty generous quantity limits for their pins. Resellers were able to snag up to four in a single order, penciling out to more than $100 in profit in ideal conditions.
That’s nothing to turn your nose up at, and four quick sales with decent profit is great for building up positive eBay feedback. This might not be the flashiest flip, but it’s enough to keep gas in your tank and help with groceries.
And if you’re looking for flashy, it might be worth keeping an eye on these pins. Like we said before, certain limited edition Kurzgesagt pins have flipped for remarkable prices in the past.
The earliest designs like their “Gold Earth” pin or “Crashing Moon” pin are listed on eBay for upwards of $1,000, and have become highly collectable in the years after their release.
As the list of Kurzgesagt limited edition pins grows, it becomes both harder and more desirable to build a full collection. Never discount a collector’s willingness to throw down ridiculous amounts of money to get their trinkets.
Who knows; in a few years these “Strange Matter” pins might be equally collectable and very valuable. Then again, $1,000 might not be worth very much with the way the dollar is inflating. Our advice is always to stick to short term profits whenever possible. Long-term holds are always risky, and money in your hand is usually the way to go.
