Summer is here, and that means summer blockbusters. It’s time to see your favorite aging action heroes suit up, oil up, and kick some ass again. This time, 61-year-old Brad Pitt stars in F1 as a former hotshot driver eager to reclaim his glory days. The film is showing at theaters across the country right now, and that means collectable popcorn buckets. Resellers know there’s a lot of potential profit in flipping these buckets, so let’s go over all the details.
So what exactly are we talking about? If you’re not familiar, collectable popcorn buckets have become a major opportunity for resellers in the last few years, with landmark designs for the Barbie movie, Dune 2, and many more reselling for remarkable profits.
Now it’s F1’s turn. Admittedly, this one is kind of a shoe-in. There are only so many suitable designs for a movie about F1 racing, and a helmet is pretty obvious.
Both AMC and Regal are selling popcorn buckets based on helmets featured in the movie. Regal’s F1 Popcorn bucket is black and gold and worn by the driver Pearce (Idris Elba), while AMC is selling helmets based on Pearce and the main character Hayes (Brad Pitt).
AMC’s F1 Popcorn helmets are a bit smaller and retailing for $35, while the Regal designs are available for $25. As is typical, you’ll need to buy your popcorn buckets at the theater itself, although you’re not required to purchase a ticket (or fill it with popcorn).
Availability is obviously theater-dependent. You might need to spend some time driving around to different locations or making phone calls to check stock.
It’ll be worth the effort though, as we’re consistently seeing F1 popcorn helmets resell for well above MSRP. Both designs are popular too, meaning this can be quite a lucrative flip depending on how many theaters you hit.
Right now, F1 Helmet popcorn buckets are reselling for around $75, more than double their retail price. Since the film premiered on June 27, we’ve tracked over 400 sales on eBay, with AMC helmets making up a slight majority.
$40 to $50 in profit per bucket sold can add up very fast, especially for resellers that snagged several buckets to resell. It goes to show that even modest flips can be worth your time when selling in bulk.
