Key Points

  • Gibson Custom produced exactly 50 Alpine White DG-335 guitars at $11,999 retail, each with Dave Grohl-signed soundhole labels

  • The guitars sold out within hours of launch on November 20th through Gibson.com and Gibson Garage locations

  • Previous Pelham Blue DG-335 models from the 2007-2008 run currently list on Reverb for up to $20,000

Gibson Custom just dropped one of the year’s most exclusive guitar releases and it disappeared faster than you could tune to drop D. The Dave Grohl DG-335 Limited Edition in Alpine White was limited to just 50 signed units and carried an eye-popping retail price, and sold out almost instantly. We’re not quite sure what these will resell for, but they won’t be cheap.

The DG-335 is a hybrid design that blends Gibson’s ES-335 semi-hollow body with Trini Lopez model features, specifically requested by Grohl. The diamond-shaped f-holes, Firebird-style headstock, and split diamond inlays create a distinctive look that’s immediately recognizable to anyone who’s seen a Foo Fighters show in the past two decades.

When Gibson Custom launched the Alpine White DG-335 on November 20th through Gibson.com and their Nashville and London flagship stores, the guitars vanished immediately. Each unit came with a soundhole label personally signed by Dave Grohl, making this the most exclusive version of his signature model ever produced.

This marks the first time Gibson has offered the Alpine White finish on the DG-335, despite Grohl playing this exact spec on Foo Fighters stages worldwide since 2021. Previous releases came in Pelham Blue, Ebony, and Metallic Gold, with the Pelham Blue versions commanding serious secondary market premiums.

Gibson Custom equipped each Alpine White model with unpotted Custombuckers, a TonePros ABR-1 bridge, and finished it in Alpine White gloss nitrocellulose lacquer. The specs mirror Grohl’s personal guitars, right down to the mahogany neck carved to the Trini Lopez profile.

The exclusivity factor is real. Previous DG-335 runs ranged from 200 to 300 units. This Alpine White edition at 50 pieces represents the smallest production run Gibson Custom has done for any Grohl signature model. Combined with the signed soundhole labels and the fact this is the first Alpine White offering, these guitars were destined to sell out fast.

Here’s where it gets interesting for resellers. We can’t find any Alpine White DG-335 sales yet because they literally just dropped, but historical data on previous DG-335 releases tells a compelling story.

The original 2007-2008 Pelham Blue DG-335 run of 200 signed units retailed around $4,000. Today, those same guitars list on Reverb for $15,000 to $20,000 when they surface. Guitar World confirmed one current listing at $20,000, and based on search results, these guitars rarely hit the market at all.

That’s a 4-5X appreciation over 17 years for a guitar that had four times the production quantity of this Alpine White release. The math isn’t hard to do.

What is the DG-335 Worth?

Let’s be realistic about expectations. The Alpine White DG-335 won’t immediately triple in value. Short-term flippers looking for quick profits will probably be disappointed. The guitars are too expensive and too niche for casual buyers, and anyone willing to drop five figures on a guitar is savvy enough to wait out initial flipper desperation.

But medium to long-term? This could be a monster. Here’s the case for serious appreciation:

The 50-unit production run is absurdly small for a signature model from a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. For comparison, limited Gibson releases typically run 200-500 units. The Alpine White finish has never been offered before despite being Grohl’s most-played spec since 2021. Every unit is signed by Grohl himself, adding provenance that matters in the vintage guitar market.

Previous DG-335 models have proven strong secondary market performance. The Pelham Blue guitars holding $15,000-$20,000 valuations weren’t speculation, they were actual asking prices from serious sellers. And those had 200 units in circulation compared to this run’s 50.

Bottom Line

The Gibson Custom Dave Grohl DG-335 Alpine White is the kind of release that separates collectors from flippers. The upfront cost, limited availability, and long holding period required for serious appreciation mean this isn’t a quick flip opportunity. But as a collectible investment piece? The fundamentals are rock solid.

If you somehow secured one, congratulations. Hold it for 2-3 years minimum and watch the market. If you missed it, don’t expect to find these listed anywhere for months, and when they do appear, expect asking prices well above the $11,999 retail.

For everyone else, there’s always the Epiphone version at $599. It won’t appreciate like the Gibson Custom model, but at least you can actually play it without worrying about dings affecting five-figure valuations.
