McDonald’s released a limited series of six cups yesterday
They were available a la carte or with a meal for under $10
Resellers have flipped them for as much as $50
Yesterday, McDonald’s launched their latest marketing campaign with a new series of throwback Collector’s Cups. Each is based on an iconic generation of Happy Meal toys, and they’re only available for a limited time. Resellers sprang into action, making multiple orders and snagging entire collections of the new cups. Within 24 hours we’ve recorded plenty of aftermarket sales for these Collector’s Cups, but it remains to be seen if the market will hold up.
Like most Americans, we’re guessing your childhood was filled with fond memories of drinking from the hose, staring out the car window, and begging your parents for McDonald’s. There was truly nothing better than the electrifying rush of sugar and preservatives after finally wearing them down.
And now McDonald’s is eager to cash in on your misplaced nostalgia with a new line of “””collectable””” glassware themed around classic Happy Meal toys.
Six new Collector’s Cups were available for sale at McDonald’s locations across the country yesterday. You could either purchase a “Collector’s Meal” for either breakfast or lunch, or purchase the cups individually through the McDonald’s app.
McDonald’s Senior Marketing Director Guillaume Huin broke the entire promotion down through an informative Twitter thread that you can read through above.
The McDonald’s Collector’s Meals would run you a little under $10 based on location, while the cups themselves came out to about $5. There are a total of six different variants, all based on a particular theme.
All in all, it seems like a very successful promotion for Macca’s. We’ve seen a very positive reception on social media in the last 24 hours. Perhaps more importantly, we’ve also seen many of these cups go up for sale on eBay.
Because why should McDonald’s have all the fun (and profit)? Resellers saw their opportunity and took it with these cups, and have been flipping tacky glassware all day long.
Right now, McDonald’s Collector Cups are reselling for $20 to $50 at a time. No design in particular seems to be more popular than the others, and we’ve yet to see anyone flip the entire collection in one go.
It’s a pretty simple and straightforward flip. Get a burger, get a cup, get on eBay. We don’t have very high expectations for these in the future, but short term profit is completely fine and all you really need sometimes.
Hey, while you’re here, you should read our article about McDonald’s “Mac Coins“. Minted during the height of Bitcoin’s mainstream popularity, these coins took on a life of their own that thoroughly exceeded the value of the commodity backing them (Big Macs).
And of course, subscribe to our newsletter. You can probably tell by now, but we cover all kinds of weird stuff on this blog. The one thing they all have in common is they resell for a profit, no matter how ridiculous they might be.
