Leatherman Restocked Their Garage 005 "Anniversary" Multitool

For anyone who missed our original Garage Vault coverage, a quick primer on why this matters.

The Leatherman Garage Batch 005 40th Anniversary Tool dropped on July 5, 2023 as the fifth entry in Leatherman’s Garage series. Prior to the 005, enthusiasts were skeptical about the value of a line of “collectable” multitools. That would all change with the “Anniversary” knife.

It was the brand’s most technically ambitious tool to date: built on the FREE platform for one-handed magnetic operation, it featured a MagnaCut steel blade (the first time MagnaCut had been used in a multitool), a Burnt Bronze Cerakote finish, spring-action pliers, and a 20-tool loadout.

Limited to 1,983 units as a nod to the company’s founding year, it retailed for $275. The site crashed under demand, and it sold out in roughly 20 minutes. Within a week, eBay sold listings were clustering around the $1,000 mark.

Leatherman ran a broader “From the Vault” event starting March 31 this year, bringing back several earlier Garage releases via lottery. The Batch 005 was not confirmed when we first covered the event, but it appeared as the final lottery option with entries closing on April 3. Winners were notified by email.

Winners that listed their tools for sale are seeing eBay sales in the $1,100 to $1,600 range, with the higher end representing the current ask ceiling. That’s notably stronger than the $1,000 to $1,100 range the Batch 005 was trading at during its peak in 2023.

After fees, a $1,500 sale nets around $1,305. Against the $275 retail, that’s roughly $1,030 in profit per unit. Not bad for clicking a raffle entry.

The original run was numbered out of 1,983. This lottery almost certainly produced a fraction of that quantity, though Leatherman has not disclosed the restock size. Collectors who missed the original drop and have been watching the secondary market for years finally had a second shot, which drove strong lottery participation. Now that it’s sold out again, demand is concentrated among a buyer pool that’s been waiting.

If you won the lottery, you’re sitting on a clean four-figure flip. The market is active and the demand is proven. Sell now if you want to lock in profits at the current peak, or hold if you believe collector demand for the tool continues to strengthen. There’s a reasonable case for the latter given how rare the Batch 005 remains in any form.

One risk worth flagging: Leatherman has now reopened the Garage Vault twice. Each time they do this, it puts some pressure on the long-term collector thesis that these tools are truly one-and-done. If you’re holding for appreciation over years rather than months, keep that in mind.
