100 official Wu-Tang Clan District street signs were sold for $75
They sold out in under an hour
Resellers have flipped similar signs for over $500
Yesterday, the NYC Department of Transportation released a collection of limited edition street signs. Rather than hanging them up, these were sold directly to the public as part of a series of tributes to New York’s most influential figures. This time, the Wu-Tang Clan were honored with their very own and very official “Wu-Tang Clan District” signs. Previous NYC DOT releases have flipped for over $500 in the past, and this one is looking just as profitable.
If you’ve spent any significant amount of time in a frat house or stoner’s garage, you’ve probably seen a street sign mounted on the wall. Sign-stealing is an old tradition, and has caused problems for unfortunately named streets like “Bong” and “Morningwood” over the years.
The New York City DOT has responded with their own line of collectable, publicly available signs. They’re all produced by the official NYC Sign Shop responsible for the city’s signage, and regularly honor notable New Yorkers with commemorative releases.
On November 7, the NYC Sign Shop sold a (very) limited number of street signs for New York’s own Wu-Tang Clan. These were available in either a traditional green or black and yellow, and read “Wu-Tang Clan District” in a distinctly municipal font.
Wu-Tang Clan street signs were exclusively available from the NYC Sign Shop’s online store. They were $75, and limited to one per customer. Just 50 signs were made in each colorway, for a total of 100 total Wu-Tang Clan street signs.
With Respect to Inspectah Deck in the Group’s Second Album, DOT Won’t Be Dropping Mockeries – These Signs Are the Real Thing
This was not an easy drop, and not one that any serious Wu-Tang fan wanted to miss. With just 100 going out the door, the odds of snagging one were quite slim.
Collectors that have been paying attention knew what to expect. In the last few months The NYC Sign Shop has produced signs for the Beastie Boys, Notorious B.I.G., and Stan Lee. These were all similarly limited, and all sold out in a manner of seconds.
Like those that came before it, Wu-Tang street signs are all sold out, and it will only be a matter of time until we start seeing them appear on eBay.
We’re expecting to see Wu-Tang street signs resell for around $300, although that they could easily go for more. Other limited edition releases from the NYC Sign Shop have flipped for a similar amount, with some going for as much as $500 at a time.
These were produced in just as limited numbers as the Wu-Tang signs. We’re pretty confident New Yorkers and Wu-Tang fans will show up in force to snag one of these to hang over the fireplace, now we just have to wait and see what they’re willing to pay.
