iam8bit has produced a $100 Collector’s Edition for Outer Wilds
A new vinyl record based on its expansion will also be available
These are preorders expected to ship closer to Summer
We’ve got a special treat for the early risers. iam8bit is set to release a new version of the video game Outer Wilds for PS5 and Switch. While the game has been out for almost five years, but it’s never gotten a proper premium collector’s edition. Until now. Mobius Digital and iam8bit have collaborated to produce a fitting celebration of the game. Previous pieces of Outer Wilds merchandise have resold for incredible markups, so resellers are paying close attention to this drop. Strap in.
So just what are we talking about? Last year, we covered the wonderful vinyl version of Outer Wilds soundtrack, which was reselling for over $500 at the time.
You can read that article here for a deeper explanation of why people love the game so much, but all you really need to know is that Outer Wilds is a special game. From its art to its music to its ability to terrify and inspire, it’s a game that leaves an impression on people.
And in that time it’s never gotten a proper collector’s edition. There was a $60 “Explorer’s Edition” produced as a collaboration with Limited Run Games, but nothing standout or spectacular.
Now, Mobius Digital and iam8bit have teamed up to remedy that. Here is the Outer Wilds Collector’s Edition:
Included is a combined copy of both the base game and expansion “Echoes of the Eye”, a canvas bag, journal and game sleeve, bandana, a set of seven patches based on the -in-game planets, “bonus item from a doomed timeline”, which looks an awful lot like a kazoo, and an “Eye of the Universe” clasp.
The whole collection is priced at $100, and the game has no region lock. iam8bit will begin selling Outer Wilds Collector’s Editions at 9 A.M. Pacific on February 29, 2024.
At the same time the Collector’s Edition goes live, iam8bit will also be selling an exclusive vinyl version of the soundtrack for Echoes of the Eye, Outer Wilds’ expansion released in 2021.
This is worth paying attention. Outer Wilds first came to the attention of resellers for the original vinyl pressing of its soundtrack. These were first produced in 2020, and were not repressed until last year.
Because of the game’s popularity and the scarcity of the record, Outer Wilds vinyl records were reselling for as much as $500 at their peak.
Yes, the 2023 represses killed the extreme ends of the market, but Outer Wilds vinyl records were still a profitable flip. And while Outer Wilds received an expansion in 2021 and an entire hour of new music, the soundtrack for the expansion has only been released on streaming services.
It has not received a vinyl pressing, which is something fans have been asking for and frequently speculating about, especially after the original Outer Wilds vinyl was repressed last year.
So today’s vinyl release is very important to fans of the game. Given how well the last vinyl records have sold, iam8bit is likely going to produce a lot of these, and will very likely issue a repressing after the first batch sells out.
That means these probably won’t ever achieve the incredible prices of the first vinyl, but we do expect these to be a profitable flip.
iam8bit offers a two week refund window on preordered items. Only unshipped items are eligible for a refund, and only if the order is cancelled within two weeks of being placed. Keep that in mind if you decide to buy one of these records.
