Neil Young signed a limited number of vinyl records yesterday
Only albums purchased at Traffic Records in Atascadero were signed
Signed vinyl records are listed on eBay for $1,000+
There was a pretty unique opportunity for Neil Young fans and resellers yesterday. The Canadian artist pulled up to a record store in Atascadero, CA early Friday morning, and if you were in the doors earlier enough, you could have secured a signature from Young himself. We’ve already seen a few four-figure listings for the record go up on eBay, and it’s only a matter of time until they start selling.
Alright, let’s talk about music. Neil Young just released a new album called “Before and After“. It’s an exploration of 13 songs throughout his career, some of which are hits and some deeper cuts.
It’s mostly an acoustic album. Young is credited with vocals, guitar, and even a pipe organ. If you’re a Neil Young fan, this probably right up your alley.
This music presentation defies shuffling, digital organization, separation. Only for listening. That says it all
To promote “Before and After”, Young announced that he would be signing vinyl at Traffic Records in Atascadero, California. Atascadero is a small city near San Luis-Obispo, and is allegedly where he married Daryl Hannah in 2018 (for the second time).
For a star this big, getting a signed record was a pretty big deal. To get a signed Neil Young vinyl, you had to jump through a few hoops. Traffic Records opened at 7, but Young wouldn’t begin signing albums until noon.
The store published a full list of regulations which you can see below, but the short version is that Young would be signing 300 or so records on a first come, first serve basis; and only merchandise purchased at the event was eligible to be scribbled on. Oh, you also had to wear a mask to get a signature.
And now they’re all gone. Traffic Record’s Instagram shows that the event actually wasn’t too crazy. Considering the fairly last minute notice and unexpected location, a lot of Neil Young fans that would have liked to attend weren’t able to make it.
Fortunately, there are plenty of resellers out there willing to lend a hand.
As of this writing, none of these signed albums have sold yet. Only two have been listed on eBay so far, both for over $1,000.
Neil Young signed merchandise has sold in the past for hundreds of dollars, with some sales going for more than $3,000. It’s hard to assign a value to these records before we’ve seen any of them sell, but we feel it’s safe to say they’re worth more than what Traffic Records was selling them for.
At this point, you might be wondering how you were even supposed to know about this. The announcement was pretty lowkey, and Traffic Records only confirmed that Neil Young would be there on December 6, two days before the actual signing.
Unless you were devotedly following social media feeds for Neil Young and a local records shop in Atascadero, this was easy to miss.
Resell Calendar Elite members didn’t miss out though. This was was posted on Thursday afternoon, and members in the SLO area were given heads up before the drop went down. If they didn’t have anything going on the next morning, this was an easy opportunity to snag a valuable collectible.
If you want to start getting in on flips like these, you should join RC Elite too. Call it a Christmas gift to yourself, and your wallet.
