A Prototype Xbox Elite Controller Was Sold on OfferUp

The original poster said they paid $200 for the controller and asked the community to help identify it. The design was notably chunkier and distinct from previous Elite controllers, but it was clearly high quality and not an obvious fake.

It didn’t take long to connect the dots, especially when compared to leaked designs posted earlier this year. One commenter summed up the consensus bluntly: “That’s an Elite serie(s) 3 prototype.” We’re inclined to agree. While this might be an elaborate hoax, the effort required would be significant.

As for the specs, there isn’t a whole lot to report. The controller appears to sport a pair of scroll wheels that match a leak from earlier this year. In fact, the controller posted on Reddit looks very similar to the leaked images we had of the Series 3 Elite controller.

Another member of the thread noted that the controller could be linked to a communication Microsoft sent to the FCC earlier this year. In it, Microsoft requested confidentiality until January 2027. It’s possible this Redditor just got a very advanced preview of a product scheduled to release next year.

Microsoft cut roughly 3,200 jobs from its Xbox division this July, about 20% of the unit, in what its own gaming CEO called the biggest restructuring in Xbox’s history. All it takes is one pissed off former Xbox employee to hustle out of the building with a dev prototype and a plan to get revenge on Microsoft. We’ll also note that this controller was found in the Seattle area, close to Microsoft’s main campus in Redmond.

To be clear, there is no actual evidence that’s what happened here. Nobody knows how this controller left Microsoft’s building, and it could just as easily be an elaborate prop or a troll built to look convincing. But given the timing, the theory practically writes itself, and there is something deeply satisfying about imagining a recently cut Xbox employee listing a piece of unreleased hardware as a little bit of additional severance. After a round of layoffs that big, a little chaos on the way out feels almost deserved.

The buyer noted they were unable to connect to any of their devices whether over cable or Bluetooth, and it’s likely the controller is hard-locked to a dev console. This just a collector’s item.
