When Xbox teased its 25th Anniversary collection back in June, we predicted it would be the most desirable Xbox console ever produced. That was without any information on pricing, production numbers, or features. Xbox has been keeping those details close to their chest, but a new leak has come out ahead of Gamescom that offers collectors and resellers some new information.

Xbox 25th Anniversary Controller Leak Explained

The leak comes from Dealabs’ billbil-kun, who reports that Xbox will be showcasing the 25th Anniversary Collection at Gamescom 2026. The information in the leak is supposedly what Xbox will be showing off next week.

billbil-kun claims that the Xbox Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition will cost $80 and open for preorder on August 26, the same day Xbox is expected to hold its Gamescom showcase. The leak also indicates the controller itself will ship in October. No information was provided on the consoles themselves, just the controllers.

When Xbox first announced the 25th anniversary collection in June, the console and controller were both slated for a November launch window in select markets, with no pricing confirmed. If this new leak is accurate, the controller’s release may have moved up a month ahead of the console, or the leaker may simply have the date wrong. We will not know for sure until Microsoft confirms something officially.

As for the 25th Anniversary Xbox consoles, we’re still waiting on new info. However, Xbox’s original reveal stated the controllers and consoles would be available as a bundle. As they are both part of the same collection, it’s possible that preorders for both could be opening as soon as next week.

Update 8/21: billbil-kun published another leak today indicating the 25th Anniversary Xbox consoles will retail for $900 and are expected to “release” on Black Friday. Whether Xbox will open preorders earlier is unclear.

Why This Matters for Resellers

We’ve been tracking this opportunity closely since the collection’s reveal in June. At the time, we predicted it would be the most collectable Xbox ever produced, and we’re sticking by it.

Demand will be extremely high for these consoles and controllers, and we expect to see many of them resold for a profit after preorders close. Total profits will be heavily dependent on production numbers, but it’s entirely possible to see Xbox’s 25th Anniversary consoles reselling for around 2X MSRP.

Assuming Xbox applies a similar markup to the consoles as they do the controllers, the 25th Anniversary Xbox console will ~~probably cost between $750 to $800~~ billbil-kun has stated the console will retail for $900. This would make it the most expensive Xbox ever sold. Still, we expect to see these consoles resell for several hundred dollars over that price.

If that sounds ridiculous, just look at what PlayStation’s 30th Anniversary consoles were reselling for in 2024. Hype for the collection was through the roof, which led to $1,000 Ps5 Pro Anniversary bundles going for up to $4,000 after launch. In fact, those consoles are still reselling for $5,000+ today.

Xbox has always had a bit of a little brother complex towards PlayStation, so we’re not expecting to see their 25th Anniversary consoles hit these highs. Still, it goes to show that gamers are willing to shell out big time when you combine a limited edition release with nostalgia.

There were several factors that made these 30th Anniversary PS5 bundles flip so hard, but by far the most important was the production numbers. Sony limited the release to just 12,300 individually numbered consoles, globally. This triggered a massive rush for preorders as gamers competed for an allocation, and practically guaranteed the consoles would sell at a massive markup on eBay.

We hope that Xbox copies Sony on this move. It appears the company is shifting its strategy when it comes to limited releases, as both Halo: Campaign Evolved and Gears: E-Day Collector’s Editions sold out almost immediately after launch. Rather than slapping a “limited edition” label on a product and shoveling out a billion of them, it seems like Xbox is actually underproducing their recent exclusive releases to get customers motivated and stir up hype. We’re just speculating, but maybe that same logic will be applied to the 25th Anniversary consoles.

Bottom Line

The information in billbil-kun’s leak will supposedly be corroborated at Gamescom next week. If the details match, preorders will likely open at the same time.

Stay tuned for more information on the consoles themselves. Placing a preorder for the controller probably isn’t a bad play, but the major profits will come from the limited edition consoles. If preorders open at the same time as the controllers, we recommend placing as many orders as possible.
