US Mint Strikes 250 Silver July 4th Quarters

Happy birthday George Washington!

Key Points

  • The US Mint struck only 250 silver 2.5 ounce Declaration of Independence quarters on July 4th

  • Each coin is edge numbered from 1 to 250 with no mint mark and a special July 4th privy mark

  • No price has been set since these will be sold at a future undated Mint auction

America just turned 250, and the Mint marked the exact day a little differently than usual. Instead of another six or seven figure mintage for the anniversary, the agency has struck just 250 silver replicas of the July 4th quarters collectors are hunting for. These will be going up for auction soon, and we don’t even want to think about what they’ll gavel for.

2.5 Ounce Silver July 4th Quarters

The Mint announced that its Philadelphia facility struck 250 of these 2.5 ounce silver quarters on the Fourth of July, under the authority that lets it produce silver fractional coins for the Semiquincentennial program. They carry no mint mark, but each one is edge numbered sequentially from 1 through 250 and stamped with the same special “July 4” privy mark found on the circulating version.

Design wise, these are a direct silver counterpart to the Declaration of Independence quarters already turning up in pocket change nationwide. Same Liberty Bell reverse, same privy mark, just struck in 2.5 ounces of silver instead of copper-nickel, and produced in a mintage that is a tiny fraction of a percent of the circulating run.

There is no set price and no purchase window right now. The Mint says they will go to auction at a later date.

Nothing the Mint has released this year has scarcity like this. A mintage of 250 is minuscule even by the standards of a program built around limited editions, and these coins carry a level of provenance that collectors rarely get: struck on the exact holiday they commemorate, individually numbered by hand, and tied directly to America’s 250th birthday.

At today’s silver spot price of roughly $62 an ounce, the metal in one of these 2.5 ounce coins is worth around $155. Nobody expects them to sell anywhere close to that. With only 250 in existence and the kind of collector story that rarely comes along, an auction price in the tens of thousands per coin would not be surprising once the Mint sets a date.

Semiquincentennial Coins Resell

2026 has been remarkably lucrative for anyone flipping US Mint products. We started the year with a mad rush on newly circulating coinage after the Mint revealed limited edition designs for nickels, quarters, and dimes. Coin resellers were trading rolls and boxes for nearly ten times face value early on.

And the hype has continued to build. The circulating July 4th quarters that inspired this silver release have already begun trading hands online in the $500 to $1,000 range, and on July 5, a lot of 50 quarters sold for $40,000, presumably to a speculator hoping to exchange them for a down payment on a house a few years from now.

That is on top of the Mint’s uncirculated 250th American Eagle gold coin, which retailed for $5,370 on May 28 and has since traded for up to $7,000.

There are still plenty of opportunities left to cash in on the hype. Last month, the Mint announced they would be producing an extremely limited run of gold and silver Liberty Bell coins and medals, and resellers immediately began salivating.

These will go up for sale through the Mint’s website on July 13. After the reveal, we predicted that the silver Liberty Bell medals would be one of the most lucrative flips of the year. We’ll be shocked if these aren’t immediately trading for $2,000+ after the drop.

If you’ve been sleeping on coins this year, you’re doing yourself a disservice. Opportunities like this do not come up often, and the Mint has proven they want to capitalize on America’s semiquincentennial. Coin collectors are willing to pay a premium while hype is high, so do yourself a favor and join the party while it’s in full swing.
