  • Topps 2023 Chrome Logofractor boxes were put up for a raffle in August

  • Winners were announced last week, and were able to buy four boxes for $65 each

  • Boxes can resell for $150 or more

Last weekend, lucky resellers in the NYC area had an opportunity to make hundreds of dollars in easy profit. MLB’s flagship store in NYC ran a raffle for Topps Chrome Logofractor boxes in August, and now the winners of that raffle are being picked. Up to four boxes could be purchased, and these can resell for around triple what they retailed for. Additionally, the same store also had the boxes available as an in-store purchase on occasion. All together, these boxes were immensely profitable, and all it took was a little luck to secure an order.

Now, flipping cards is not exactly a new concept. Even non-resellers are familiar with the idea, and buying and selling trading cards is an understood aspect of the hobby.

The last few years have seen an incredible explosion of interest in trading cards. From Pokemon to pickleball, cards are the new gold. That also means that distributors have had to rethink the way cards get to market. We’ve all seen the TikToks and tweets of store shelves completely stripped bare of card restocks, and purchase limits can only go so far in combating the frenzy.

One of these is the 2023 Topps Chrome Logofractor boxes. These are a slightly remixed version of standard Chrome boxes, but come with a special twist

Included in each box are five packs of Chrome base cards, and two exclusive packs with five cards each. The cards in the exclusive packs are all “logofractors”, a special version of the refractor design that features the MLB logo.

These are special because they can only be obtained from the Logofractor boxes. There’s around 200 possible cards in the Logofractor set, and collectors are hungry for them. The design first debuted last year, and its popularity led to it being reproduced for the 2023 season. They cost $65 this time, up from $50 in 2022.

As you might expect, Topps Chrome Logofractor boxes tend to be out of stock pretty frequently. These will sell out as soon as they’re stocked, and a sizable aftermarket for them has existed ever since they were released.

In August, the MLB Flagship store in NYC started putting up Logofractor boxes through a raffle. To enter, all you’d need to do was call the store on the morning of the 28th, and leave a message with your information. After a few weeks of waiting, winners would receive a call back on September 16th and had the opportunity to buy up to four boxes from the store.

The Flagship store also sold these boxes in-person. While they would restock here more commonly than other locations, buying in-person was usually hit or miss. You might get lucky, you probably won’t. At least with a raffle you don’t have to worry about wasting a drive.

Because of the exclusive nature of the Logofractor cards, these boxes are very popular on the aftermarket. We saw a huge market emerge for them last year, and the 2023 Logofractor boxes are no different.

Currently, a sealed Topps Chrome Logofractor box is reselling for around $150. Considering these retailed at $65 and had a purchase limit of four, resellers that managed to win a raffle or get luck in the store were able to secure around $340 in profit or more.

Additionally, some sellers have had success by selling their Logofractor boxes as a “box break”. This is a method where instead of selling the entire box to a single customer, you instead auction off individual parcels (typically a team), and then livestream opening the box or boxes. After the boxes are opened, the cards are sent to the winning bidders.

One seller that sold their Logofractor set of four as a box break through eBay ended up with around $640 in total sales. After subtracting the costs of the boxes, their profit came out to about $380. A little ahead of what the boxes sold for in general, and some of the buyers paid less than $5 for the team of their choice.

It’s not like there was ever much of a question whether these cards would be profitable to flip. We knew from last year that Logofractors are an enormously popular set, and the only tricky bit is actually getting your hands on one. The MLB raffle was great because it meant resellers could enter just by making a phone call. No need to go driving around or wasting time looking through sold out shelves.
