The Tesla Balance Bike for Kids retailed for $225 and sold out within hours on July 16
eBay listings are already going up with sellers asking for $1,000 to $5,000
Orders are expected to ship in late August, and Tesla allows returns within 30 days of delivery
Look, we make a lot of jokes about Tesla fanboys, but it looks like the company has us beat. They’ve finally built the company’s first bike, and it’s designed for toddlers. It’s not the bike Tesla fanatics wanted, but maybe it’s the one they deserve. In any case, these balance bikes sold out extremely fast, and it’s only a matter of time before we see them reselling.
The Tesla Balance Bike is aimed at kids ages 2 to 5, with a magnesium frame, a five-position adjustable seat, and the same design language as the rest of Tesla’s lineup, right down to the wordmark on the side and the T logo up front.
There’s no chain, no battery, and no drivetrain. Kids just push off the ground with their feet. It’s listed as out of stock now, with Tesla offering email sign-ups for the next restock and initial orders shipping in late August.
This is exactly the kind of drop Tesla’s merch team has become known for. A few times a year they release something quirky, expensive relative to its category, and produced in limited numbers, and it sells out fast enough that resellers take notice. We’ve tracked this pattern before with the Tesla surfboard, the Tesla CyberHammer, and even Tesla’s tequila. None of those are things you’d expect a car company to sell, and all of them turned into flips.
Tesla doesn’t publish sell-through numbers for shop drops like this, so it’s unclear how many bikes went out the door before it sold out.
Given how fast it disappeared, the batch was probably small, which is usually the setup for real scarcity rather than manufactured hype. Pair that with an audience of Tesla owners who already spend freely on branded extras, and this has the ingredients of past merch flips that worked.
Tesla will likely restock the Balance Bike in small numbers in the next few weeks. Whatever restock is loaded will sell out extremely fast, so we recommend signing up for email notifications on Tesla’s site.
These bikes haven’t started reselling – yet. A handful have already been listed for sale, ranging from a modest $1,000 Buy-it-Now price to one seller asking for nearly $50,000. We don’t think it will sell for quite that much.
Our guess is these will settle somewhere in the $800 to $1,200 range. Tesla fans are notorious for their disposable income and urge to buy expensive toys. Considering how few of these were sold, the four of these currently listed on eBay might be the only sales we see.
This is speculative until real sales post. Tesla’s standard shop policy allows returns within 30 days of delivery for unopened items, so buyers who cop on a restock and can’t flip it aren’t completely stuck, though a resale attempt after opening the box changes that math.
