Taylor Swift's Patient Zero Vinyl is Already Listed on eBay

Patient Zero is Swift’s newest single and part of the upcoming re-release of The Life of a Showgirl. The song hits streaming platforms tomorrow, September 25, and its music video premieres at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday. Earlier this week, Swift kicked off the rollout with three limited edition CDs, and those sold out fast too.

Today’s follow-up was two 7 inch vinyl variants on Swift’s official webstore. His Halo is pressed in a black and white circular pattern, and Reflected Light comes in white and gray. Both carry Patient Zero on side A and an instrumental version on side B, along with collectible front and back covers. The store notes that coloration may vary from record to record because of the custom manufacturing process.

Each record was priced at $13, limited to one per customer, and restricted to U.S. billing and shipping addresses. The sales window was set to run until 1:59 PM ET tomorrow, but both listings were marked unavailable long before that. Orders are expected to ship October 13.

This is the same playbook Swift ran for her Toy Story CD and plenty of drops before it. Short window, low price, per customer limits, and a sellout that beats the clock.

The most common listing on eBay is a bundle of both variants, and those are going for around $90. After spending $26 on the pair, eBay’s 13.6% fee takes about $12 off a $90 sale, which leaves roughly $50 before shipping. Factor in the webstore’s shipping charge and the cost of sending the records to a buyer, and most resellers are looking at somewhere around $40 in profit per set.

Keep in mind that these records don’t ship until mid-October, so anything selling today is a presale. You’re on the hook for delivery on a timeline you don’t control, and if a shipment is delayed or a record shows up damaged, you’re the one dealing with an unhappy buyer.

Vinyl does carry a bit more collector appeal than CDs, which helps explain why these sets are fetching more than the CD bundles did. Seven inch singles are a format Swift fans tend to hang on to, and the two contrasting covers make a matched pair more attractive than a single record on its own.

This was a very traditional Taylor Swift release with a very predictable result: modest, quick profits for anyone who checked out in time. If you’re holding a pair, listing now while attention is high makes sense. On the risk side, the webstore accepts returns within 30 days of delivery for items in original condition, but opened vinyl can’t be returned, so keep your records sealed if you want that safety net. Stay tuned for future releases, because Swift clearly isn’t done with Patient Zero yet.
