Kevin Parker announced this week he will stop signing autographs for fans
Signed Tame Impala vinyl and posters have sold on eBay for $400 to nearly $1,000 since the announcement
Official signed merch releases and meet and greets are (probably) still on the table

Tame Impala’s frontman took to Instagram this week to tell fans not to expect a signature if they run into him on the street, pointing to aggressive collectors and a security risk his team wanted handled. The announcement gathered a surprising amount of attention in collector’s circles, and it’s translating into a surge in demand for anything with Kevin Parker’s signature on it.

Why Kevin Parker Won't Sign Autographs

Parker laid out the decision across a series of Instagram Stories posted Monday, explaining that a rise in what he called “aggressive autograph hounds” pushed him to stop signing items or posing for photos outside hotels and airports entirely. He said he wasn’t especially enthusiastic about impromptu signings to begin with, but a recent incident involving collectors “using kids” to cajole an autograph out of him was the final straw.

In a follow-up post, he added that he’s also stepping back from meeting fans in venue parking lots after shows, something his security team asked him to end once the crowds became too large to manage safely.

The reaction on eBay was immediate. Multiple signed vinyl copies and posters have sold for hundreds of dollars in the past few days, with prime examples flipping for over $1,000. This is well above what similar items had been fetching before the announcement. Sellers noticed too. New listings for signed Deadbeat and Lonerism pressings have gone up in the days since, most priced higher than comparable copies that sold before Parker’s post went semi-viral.

This isn’t a total end to Tame Impala signed merch. Parker’s statement was specifically about chance encounters on the road. Official releases through his merch store and any scheduled meet and greets are still fair game, which means today’s market could soften if either resumes. That said, Parker’s autograph was already pretty rare to find before this announcement, so don’t expect any major signed merch releases any time soon.

What Makes a Celebrity Autograph Valuable?

A situation like this is a good excuse to talk about what actually drives autograph values, because fame alone doesn’t do it. Willingness to sign matters just as much, sometimes more.

Here’s a fun test: whose signature is worth more, Larry David or Taylor Swift? It’s Larry David, and it isn’t close. He rarely produces signed merchandise and almost never signs in public, and collectibles with his autograph have sold for over $500. Swift, despite being one of the biggest stars on the planet, signs constantly through official releases. She just restocked signed CDs for The Life of a Showgirl, and those were trading for under $100.

Larry David Autograph Taylor Swift Signed

You can argue that Larry David is funnier than Taylor Swift, but it’s clear which of them is the bigger star. Still, despite the gaps in their relative stardom, Larry David’s signature is significantly more valuable that Taylor Swift’s, and it’s entirely because of his reluctance to hand out autographs.

Bottom Line

Parker’s policy shift is a excellent illustration of this phenomenon in real time. Nothing about the merch itself changed, only the odds of getting more of it. Resellers sitting on existing signed Tame Impala pieces have a genuine window right now, but the spike is news-driven and could cool if Parker keeps signing through official channels. Treat it as a short-term opportunity, not a permanent repricing.
