The race to create the most collectible popcorn bucket continues, and resellers have been there every step of the way. For Resident Evil, theaters want you to eat your popcorn out of a bag meant to resemble the ice-filled, organ-cooling receptacles used by medical couriers. They could also double as a neat lunchbox for a Resident Evil fan. Either way, these are already reselling on eBay.

The bag is an insulated, zippered Cinemark exclusive that ties directly into the film’s plot. The Resident Evil reboot, directed by Zach Cregger, follows Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier whose delivery run goes sideways during a Raccoon City outbreak. The bag is his in-story gear, which is a smarter piece of movie merch than the usual poster tin.

All three major chains are selling the identical bag under different names. Cinemark calls it the Medical Courier Replica Bag, Regal is calling its version the Organ Transplant Popcorn Bag and bundling it with a large popcorn, and AMC’s take, the Critical Cargo Bag, goes on sale September 17 as part of its Thrills and Chills promotion. The film hits theaters September 18. Cinemark’s own online store already sold through its initial stock, so in-theater pickup is now the more reliable path.

Resident Evil Popcorn Bags Resell

A lot of the stock sold through Cinemark’s drop has reappeared on eBay, and the early sales we’re seeing are encouraging. Resident Evil’s organ bag popcorn buckets are reselling for anywhere from $40 to $80, a pretty juicy come-up for something that retailed for just under $20.

The real test will be when the “buckets” hit theaters later this month. We’ve recorded nearly 100 eBay sales for the bags since Cinemark’s drop, so it’s clear that demand is there. Will the additional supply swamp the market, or will resellers continue to take a profit?

Our money is on the latter. These bags have gotten some ribbing for looking nothing like a popcorn bucket, but that’s a good thing in our opinion. These are highly functional collectible bags with unique Resident Evil branding, perfect for picnics, shopping, or just serving as a reliable lunchbox for a Resident Evil fan. Rather than collecting dust on a shelf, these bags invite collectors to actually get some use out of their purchase, and we think that will give them longer legs than comparable popcorn buckets.
