Card shops have dealt with sticky fingered customers for about as long as trading cards have existed, but what happened at Key Items Collectibles inside Pennsylvania’s Berkshire Mall was a different level of brazen. Police say one man kept the store owner busy with conversation while his partner reached across the counter and lifted a card worth up to $8,000. Wyomissing Police are still trying to identify both men involved, and the case has become a sobering reminder for card collectors and resellers that their hobby is a target for criminals.

How the PSA 10 One Piece Card Was Stolen

According to WFMZ’s report on the theft, the card in question was locked away in theory but not in practice. It sat in an unsecured display case, and store footage shows the thief was able to simply each over and lift the card with his bare hands.

But this wasn’t a one-man operation. While the main thief was pilfering the card case, and accomplice engaged the store owner in conversation to keep him distracted during the heist. Neither man has been identified, and both are listed as persons of interest in the theft by Wyomissing police.

The card itself is about as high end as the One Piece card game gets. It’s a mint condition PSA 10 Sabo Manga Alt Art Red, with experts estimating fewer than 2,000 copies exist.

Similar PSA 10 examples of the card have sold on eBay for as much as $8,000 recently, so the theft is a real blow for the shop.

Because it’s a graded, slabbed card with a identifiable PSA tracking number, the thief will have a hard time selling the card. Theoretically, they could crack the slab and attempt to get it graded through PSA again. Hopefully the card’s rightful owner has notified PSA of the theft and has graders on the lookout for any submissions that come suspiciously close to the stolen card.

Trading Card Thefts Are Rising

This isn’t an isolated incident. Earlier this June, a New Jersey hobby shop was hit by masked thieves who smashed through a glass door and made off with an estimated $40,000 to $50,000 in Pokemon cards and merchandise in under two minutes, just days before a California store was robbed of $15,000 worth of cards.

Back in January, a break-in at Rutgers’ Jersey Mike’s Arena during the One Piece College Basketball promotion resulted in what could have been a haul worth millions of dollars, based on secondary market prices for those cards at the time. None of these thefts were random. Whoever was involved knew exactly what they were looking for and what it was worth.

And the thief or thieves involved in the Rutgers break-in was never identified. Trading cards, especially raw examples, are prime targets for thieves because of their scarcity, popularity, and their extreme value relative to their weight and size.

For collectors and resellers, this story is a reminder to treat high value cards like the valuables they actually are. It’s not just shops getting targeted. Resellers meeting up to complete in person deals have been robbed, and even killed while attempting to complete transactions.

If you’re buying or selling high value cards in person, meet somewhere public with plenty of people around, during daylight hours if possible. Plenty of collectors use the parking lot or lobby of a local police station for exactly this reason, and it costs nothing to ask a buyer or seller to meet there. You never really know who’s on the other end of a deal, and a few extra minutes of caution beats becoming the next headline.
