The Mavs' Bounty for Cooper Flagg's Debut Patch Card Sucks

Flagg was the number one overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and immediately backed up the hype. As a rookie he averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists, won Rookie of the Year, and became the youngest player in NBA history to score 50 points in a game.

Rookie Debut Patch Autographs are a newer, high-end category where a manufacturer physically cuts a swatch from the jersey a player wore in his first professional game and embeds it into a signed, numbered card. Flagg’s version pairs the patch from his NBA debut with an autograph he signed live on stage at Fanatics Fest in July.

It is a 1-of-1. Only one exists. If Flagg keeps developing into a franchise cornerstone or a genuine superstar, this card has the kind of story, scarcity, and verified history that turns into a career-defining grail piece, the type of card that ends up compared to a Mickey Mantle rookie decades from now.

The card is currently hiding in a pack of 2025-26 Topps Chrome Updates Basketball, which released August 6 in Hobby, Jumbo, Mega, and Value formats, both online through Topps and at hobby shops and major retailers. Anyone opening this product right now has a shot at the redemption card tied to Flagg, or to fellow rookies Kon Knueppel, Dylan Harper, Ace Bailey, or Derik Queen, whose own debut patch autographs are also seeded in the release.

Dallas structured the offer like an actual NBA trade proposal, with the card’s finder receiving seven items in exchange. You can review the full terms on the Mavs’ site. Here is what we estimate each one is worth, and why.

Two premium lower-level season tickets for 32 years. We’ll be generous and value each seat at $8,000, which is on the high side for 100 level season tickets. Assuming a realistic range of ticket price inflation across three decades, the total value lands between $840,000 and $1,204,000 with an estimated 3-5% annual rise in ticket price.

A signed, game-worn rookie jersey. Not the actual debut jersey (that one sold separately for a reported $1 million), just a signed jersey from his rookie season. Comparable signed game-worn jerseys from a Rookie of the Year caliber player typically land in the $5,000 to $15,000 range.

A postgame photo with Cooper. A nice keepsake with essentially no resale market. We’d put this around $100 in experiential value.

A private photoshoot with the Rookie of the Year trophy and Larry O’Brien Championship trophy. Another unique, non-transferable experience. We’ll call it $1,000.

The comparable sale everyone keeps referencing is Paul Skenes. His own one-of-one rookie debut patch autograph, from the same Topps category, sold for $1.11 million in 2025, and Skenes had also just won a Rookie of the Year award. That sale is widely credited with proving the category could hit seven figures at all.

Geoff Wilson, founder of Sports Cards Investor, told ESPN he believes Flagg’s card could reach $5 million once it changes hands, a projection built on Flagg’s higher public profile and the record-setting precedent Skenes already set. A more conservative floor, using Skenes’ actual result as a baseline would put the card somewhere around $2 million at minimum, with real upside from there depending on how the auction plays out and who ends up bidding.

Even using our most generous total, the Mavericks’ package tops out around $1.2 million and realistically sits closer to $900,000. That is less than half of even the conservative $2 million floor we are using here, and a fraction of Wilson’s $5 million ceiling. The bulk of the offer is not cash, memorabilia, or anything liquid (unless you want to be reselling your tickets for the next three decades).

We’d call that a lowball, and a pretty steep one from an organization pulling in hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue. They should have thrown in meals from the team’s personal chefs or access to their massage therapists as a sweetener.

In the words of Homer Simpson’s brain: “Money can be exchanged for goods and services”. We would advise hawking this card for as much as you can, putting half into the S&P 500 or Bitcoin or some shit, and using the other half to buy season tickets and Lamborghinis.

Ultimately, it’s up to whoever actually finds the card. The obvious move is selling at auction and letting the number speak for itself. But sentiment is a real thing in this hobby, and the Mavericks might actually find a fan stupid enough to take their offer.
