Flappy Bird all over again
Signed vinyl versions of Maestro’s soundtrack have sold out
The records were signed by both Bradley Cooper and conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin
Resellers have begun flipping them for four times what they retailed for
If you haven’t been paying attention to the world of Oscarbait, you might have missed out on 2023’s Maestro. The Spielberg-produced and Bradley Cooper-directed-and-starred-in biopic follows the life of the composer Leonard Bernstein, and is getting great reviews. After its release, a special vinyl pressing of songs of music composed by Bernstein was released. After receiving signatures on both sides of the Atlantic, the records quickly sold out.
Maestro released in September 2023, mostly through Netflix and also through select theaters. It focuses on the life and career of American composer Leonard Bernstein. Music is obviously a big part of the film, so a release of the movie’s soundtrack is a no brainer.
It consists of 20 different tracks, largely symphonic compositions by Bernstein. The orchestral pieces are performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
Deutsche Grammophon handled the vinyl pressing. For the autographed variants, the company actually flew the vinyl from Germany to be signed by Bradley Cooper in America, then back across the Atlantic so that Yannick Nézet-Séguin could sign it as well.
These cost about $110, and were in stock for several days. Resellers had all the time in the world to pick one of these up, and it seems like the investment will pay out well.
There’s still a month until the 2024 Oscars, and Maestro has been nominated in seven different categories. With the movie’s reception turning around in the public eye, taking home a few awards will do a lot for the value of these records.
We can confirm at least one aftermarket sale already though and several more listings. Right now, the Maestro signed vinyl seems to be reselling for about $400. Yes, it’s a small sample, but a very good sign.
If you managed to snag one, expect to see prices rise after the award season. Maestro might be picking up a lot of new fans soon, and hopefully some of them have money to spend.
