Just 250,000 were struck, and they were mixed in with other newly circulating coins before July 4. At least one collector has found nearly 1,000 of them in a single haul, and they’re currently valued at more than $300,000.

That's a Lot of Quarters

Coin YouTuber RobFindsTreasure bought two $500 boxes of quarters, 4,000 coins total, and started opening rolls on camera. You can watch the full hunt below, and it’s worth seeing just how fast the pace picked up. Just by opening the boxes, he was greeted with 43 July 4th privy marked quarters, with each one worth between $400 and $500.

By the time he’d opened just ten rolls of the first box, he already had 175 July 4th quarters. He kept going and finished the box with 815 of them, which works out to about 41 percent of the 2,000 quarters inside.

The video ends there, but based on the enders in box two, he’s likely sitting on close to 1,400 privy marked quarters between both boxes. For context, the Mint says it only struck 250,000 of these total, mixed into roughly 400 million ordinary quarters. RobFindsTreasure may be holding more than half a percent of the entire run. He currently has them listed for sale on his website at $475 a pop.

What Coin Collectors Say

The video has forums lit up, partly out of excitement and partly out of frustration. Sold listings on eBay show the privy quarters still moving in the neighborhood of $450 each, and one lot of fifty coins sold for a flat $40,000 earlier this month.

Even at the lower end, a haul this size is worth well over half a million dollars on paper, and that’s before accounting for the fact he can simply deposit any coin that doesn’t sell for full face value with zero downside.

Most collectors have adopted one of two theories: either the Mint’s 250,000 figure doesn’t hold up, or these coins were distributed far less evenly than advertised. We’re leaning toward the second one. Reports of finds have skewed heavily toward the East Coast, with several West Coast hunters saying the coins haven’t shown up in their banks at all. RobFindsTreasure found his quarters in the Frisco, Texas area.

Bottom Line

Prices had already been softening before this video, and a single collector controlling this much of the supply probably accelerates that. The side market for plain quarter rolls, where speculators were paying $50 to $100 for a $10 roll hoping to hit a privy coin, is likely to cool off fastest. This looks like a feast or famine situation. A roll is either loaded or empty, and that’s a rough bet for anyone buying rolls secondhand.

These coins carry zero downside since they’re legal tender at face value no matter what, so checking your change and asking your bank for rolls still costs you nothing but time.

RobFindsTreasure stated that these were not the first boxes he had opened, and his previous attempts were duds that didn’t contain a single July 4th quarter. Rather than searching through haystacks for needles, it seems like the approach here is much closer to good old fashioned gambling. Most boxes will be empty, or maybe have a few coins here and there. Some will be worth more than your house.
