May’s been a big month for movies. There’s a new “Planet of the Apes”, George Miller’s “Furiosa” is bringing us back to 2015’s incredible “Fury Road”, and Marvel fans have been hyped for “Deadpool & Wolverine”. If you like fourth wall breaks and millennial irony, this is the one to watch. One piece of promotion for this film involves small claw machines installed at certain theaters. The prizes inside have picked up a ton of attention online, and now resellers are flipping them for much more than their tickets cost. Let’s check it out.
There are all kinds of ways to market a movie. Billboards and TV spots, sure, but what about the sillier stuff? With Marvel movies consistently slumping for several years now, producers have to get creative to get people into their seats.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” is an upcoming R-rated Marvel movie slated for a July release. If you’ve been to the theater recently you’ve probably already seen the profanity-laden and tepidly homoerotic “PSA” asking people to turn their phones off.
Excited for two more hours of that? Plenty of people already are. To sweeten the deal, Marvel’s marketing team has spun a pretty clever way to promote the film.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” themed claw machines have been installed in select theaters. To play, you’ll need a special token that can be redeemed by preordering a ticket.
There is no list of locations for “Deadpool & Wolverine” claw machines. We have seen confirmation that they have been installed in AMC and Cinemark locations, so this is not exclusive to any particular company.
If you win, you’ll receive a small plastic egg. Inside are two matching necklaces depicting both Deadpool and Wolverine, made to fit together as a heart. The words “Best Friends” are engraved on the necklaces.
Rinky-dink metal necklaces? Just for the price of a movie ticket? Sign us up! As of right now, it seems like the only way to obtain one of the “Deadpool & Wolverine” necklaces is through the claw machine. Better bring your A-game.
Well, maybe there is another way. You can’t buy these necklaces in stores, no, but that doesn’t mean you can’t buy them. There’s always a friendly reseller out there willing to lend a hand for a few bucks in exchange.
Right now, “Deadpool & Wolverine” claw machine necklaces are reselling for around $150. Yes seriously. We can already hear the Alibaba knock-off machines spinning up, but any self-respecting Marvel will always want the real thing.
The real thing being a pair of mall-tier chains for a movie we would affectionately refer to as “coworker-core”. Have fun, don’t hurt yourself, shop local, etc, etc. If people want to fling money at resellers to complete their collection, we won’t stop them.
This opportunity will not last forever. Call around to your local theaters, or stop by yourself and see if they’ve had a claw machine installed. Show proof of a ticket preorder, get your token, and make sure you win! Bring along your parents, they’re probably better at claw machines than you are.
