Key Points

  • The Citizen AQ4091-56W retails for $3,100 and releases worldwide in May 2026

  • Limited to 650 pieces globally and covered under a thirty day return policy

  • Similar washi paper dial watches have struggled on secondary markets

Citizen just unveiled a genuinely impressive watch that has resellers interested. The green washi dial on the new Eco-Drive 50th Anniversary Edition is the most striking design the series has produced, and it’s generating real collector attention. The catch is that Citizen has been releasing watches in this exact format for over a year, and the ones that came before it haven’t rewarded resellers. This one might be different. It might not.

Citizen Eco-Drive Anniversary Watches

The Citizen AQ4091-56W is the flagship release in Citizen’s Eco-Drive 50th Anniversary lineup, celebrating the 1976 launch of the world’s first light-powered analog watch. The dial is the centerpiece: washi paper hand-dyed in chitose midori, a deep pine-needle green achieved by layering yellow from ibuki kariyasu grass with indigo.

The dyeing process was developed in collaboration with Watanabe’s, a specialist dye workshop in Tokushima, and the result shifts in depth depending on the angle of light.

Eco-Drive 50th Anniversary Green Washi

The case and bracelet are Super Titanium with Duratect Platinum coating, 40% lighter than stainless steel and five times harder. Inside, the Cal. A060 Eco-Drive runs to within five seconds per year, powers a perpetual calendar through February 2100, and holds an 18-month charge in power-save mode. It is 40mm across and 12.2mm thick.

Citizen has not confirmed whether all units will be available online or if a small portion will be allocated through dealers; the Citizen store locator has authorized retail locations if you want to get ahead of it.

Other Citizen Washi Dials

The AQ4091-56W sits alongside two indigo washi editions that are already out and still available at retail. Both were released in 2025 to mark the 30th anniversary of The Citizen brand, and both run the same Cal. A060 movement on Super Titanium cases.

The AQ4106-26L ($3,300, 300 units) has the tightest production run of the three. Its indigo dial is made using the Murakumo shibori cloud-dyeing technique, which produces a different pattern on every single piece. It comes on a blue crocodile strap with a black DLC-coated case. The AQ4100-65M ($3,200, 550 units) is the bracelet version of the same concept, slightly smaller at 38.3mm.

Will New Citizen Washis Resell?

The honest version: the two 2025 indigo editions were beautiful, genuinely limited watches with real craft behind them, and they did not generate resale premiums. Resellers who bought expecting a quick flip are currently sitting on them or moving them at a loss.

These listings aren’t a perfectly clean comparison. For one, many of these are worn, used watches, many with a small degree of blemishing or damage. Reselling an unopened, unworn watch like the AQ4091-56W is different.

Citizen Anniversary Washi Watch for Sale

The 50th anniversary of Eco-Drive is a milestone with a clean narrative — Citizen literally invented light-powered watchmaking — and that story is resonating with a wider audience. More collector awareness at the point of release translates to more competition for a fixed pool of 650 units.

There is a plausible path to profit here. If the broader attention translates into sell-through pressure at retail, resale premiums are achievable, particularly in the early weeks post-launch when supply is tightest. Budget for Chrono24’s 6% fee or eBay’s approximately 13% when running the numbers.

On downside protection: Citizen offers 30-day returns on unworn, unopened limited edition watches purchased directly through their website. Check any third-party retailer listing for “final sale” language before buying, since that protection does not always carry over.

Bottom Line

The solar-powered movement is worth addressing directly. High-end collectors at this price tier sometimes favor mechanical watches, and Eco-Drive can be a friction point with that segment. Citizen’s own watch community enthusiasts are highly receptive, and the brand has built a proven record of resale value on these limited editions, but buyers outside that community may push back on quartz at $3,100.

The more material concern is the upfront cost. The secondary watch market does not move quickly. If demand is softer than expected, you may hold this for months before finding the right buyer at the right price.

Citizen’s return policy gives you a thirty day runway that begins the day the watch is delivered. If you don’t find a buyer in that window, you’ll need to either return it, or take a gamble.

The AQ4091-56W releases in May 2026 through Citizen boutiques and authorized retailers worldwide, as well as CitizenWatch.eu and CitizenWatch-Global.com. No specific drop date has been confirmed yet. Monitor Citizen’s global site and sign up for any retailer notifications to stay ahead of the release.
