Key Points

  • The Yankees confirmed the Naruto giveaway card is presented by Bandai

  • Print run for the September 8 giveaway card jumped from 18,000 to 40,000 units

  • Presale listings for the still unrevealed card were already fetching $800 before this confirmation

One of the juiciest flips we’ve covered this year started as a conspiracy theory among collectors. The Naruto promo cards scheduled to be given away by the Yankees next month are part of Bandai’s upcoming Naruto TCG. This is what many resellers were banking on, and the confirmation is likely to add more fuel to an already raging fire. Let’s go over the new information.

Yankees Bandai Naruto Promo Card Details

So, a little context. Earlier this year, the Yankees announced they would be holding Naruto Night in September that included a trading card giveaway. This promo was revealed before Bandai had officially announced they would be launching a new Naruto TCG next year, but collectors began connecting the dots in June.

Well, the Yankees updated their promotional schedule page today, adding a “Presented by Bandai” tag next to Naruto Night for the first time. Now technically, that’s not official official, but it’s pretty damn close.

The card’s actual design is still a mystery. Bandai and the Yankees haven’t revealed artwork, rarity, or whether it ties into a specific upcoming set. What we do know is the giveaway just got a lot bigger. The print run listed on the schedule page jumped from 18,000 to 40,000, likely because demand for the cards had seriously outpaced supply. Ticket prices for the game have risen to over $150, and presale listings for the cards are selling for up to $800 right now.

How Resellers Should React

Don’t let those new numbers scare you. Yes, that’s more than double the previously announced supply, but it shouldn’t matter much. When the Dodgers held their second One Piece trading card giveaway this year, more than 50,000 fans were able to snag one. Those cards were reselling for up to $1,000 immediately after the game.

Now that the Yankees have more or less officially confirmed the cards will be part of Bandai’s Naruto TCG, prices will rise. The TCG isn’t set to launch until next year, and early promo cards like this give collectors a rare chance to get their hands on an upcoming product. The Chakra promo cards given away to select Gen Con attendees last week have already started reselling for over $1,000 on eBay.

This is a full green light for anyone who can still get to the Bronx on September 8. Anyone holding tickets is in a strong spot. If you’ve been waiting for official confirmation before pulling the trigger on this flip, this is your moment. Ticket prices for this game have been steadily rising over the last few weeks, and we expect a new surge as the news circulates among collectors.

How to Get a Yankees Naruto Promo Card

Get there early. Yes, the Yankees bumped the print run from 18,000 to 40,000. Yankee Stadium seats ~46,000, so theoretically nearly everyone in the park will be entitled to one. Still, get there early. Demand for these cards is extremely hot and we’re expecting long lines. You don’t want to miss an opportunity like this by farting around.

Can You Get Multiple Yankees Naruto Cards?

Valid question. Different MLB stadiums have different policies when it comes to collecting multiple giveaways, even if you present the appropriate number of tickets.

The Yankees’ policy reads: “Guests are eligible for only one item per valid same-day game ticket, per valid entry.” This would seem to indicate that a single fan that presents multiple tickets should be eligible to receive a matching number of promo items, but the truth is murkier.

Some Reddit reports indicate that Yankee Stadium staff will request single fans presenting multiple tickets to requeue and enter through a different gate to receive their additional promo items. With the amount of attention on this giveaway, there’s almost no chance of securing more than one card if you have to leave and reenter the stadium. Our recommendation is to try and coordinate with friends and family to make sure you have a matching body with each ticket scanned in.

Bottom Line

This flip goes to show that sometimes a little long term planning can be extremely lucrative. This promo was revealed back in March, and tickets have been on sale for months. If you got into this when we originally covered it in June, you could have bought up to nine tickets for $30 each. Those same seats are worth $170 right now.

And it’s not the only MLB trading card giveaway we’re tracking. The Seattle Mariners announced that they’ll be distributing 20,000 “Jimothy” trading cards to fans tomorrow, including a 1-of-1 gold variant we expect to see listed on eBay after the game. It’s been a lucrative season for resellers as more and more teams realize the viral potential of limited edition giveaways like these.
