Trader’s Joe’s popular Mystery Packs have returned in 2024
They are $3 and include three random totes
Resellers have flipped them for up to $20 at a time
Time for a throwback issue. Back in 2023, Trader Joe’s revived their popular pre-pandemic line of “Mystery Pack” reusable bags. The response was strong and we saw resellers turn easy profits flipping the limited edition bags. Now they’re back, just in time for the holiday shopping rush. This is looking like another opportunity to make easy money, so here’s everything you need to know to get in on it.
There’s a lot of overlap between resellers and card collectors. If you have experience flipping items for profit, chances are you’ve also ripped a pack of cards or two, and understand the appeal.
We’ve seen a lot of companies outside the card world break into this niche lately. Blind bags and random packs of merch are pretty common now, and even grocers like Trader Joe’s have found a way to capitalize on things.
One of their most popular traditions is their Mystery Pack. For $3, you get a pack of three different reusable bags. The bags are drawn from a pool of Trader Joe’s state bags, which are usually only available in their respective regions.

These were a regular product until the pandemic, and they didn’t return to Joe’s until 2023. Collecting state bags is a sort of hobby for regular Trader Joe’s shoppers, and these mystery packs are a way for collectors to fill out the missing states on their checklists.
You can find Trader Joe’s Mystery Bags at most locations. They will usually be on a display near the registers, although we’re seeing reports that some stores are already being cleared out. Like the rest of their products, you cannot buy Trader Joe’s Mystery Bags online.
You can see where things are going. When we covered these last year, we saw a pretty short timeline between these releasing, selling out, and reappearing on eBay.
Right now, 2024 Trader Joe’s Mystery Bags are reselling for about $15 to $20. With no quantity limits, a lucky reseller can snag up four, five, ten of these packs and cash out anywhere from $50 to $100 in profit from a single shopping visit.
But maybe you’re a gambler, and always preferred ripping packs of cards to selling them unopened. Some of the bags in Trader Joe’s Mystery Packs are actually pretty rare, and we’ve seen them flip for solid profits.
These aren’t the usual state bags, and can fall under various different designs. Some of the most popular are Nocturne and Rare Mistake Catcher Trader Joe’s Mystery Bags, and they are reselling for over $30 at a time.
There is no 2024 Trader Joe’s Mystery Pack checklist, and we don’t know all of the potential bags in each pack. If you decide to open your pack, you’ll need to do some research on the bags you get, and check eBay to see what similar designs are reselling for.
Reselling sealed packs is obviously less risky, but you stand to potentially double your profits if you get lucky. We’ll let you make the call.
And if you want to learn more about reselling and catch new flips before they pass you by, you need to subscribe to our newsletter. There’s still plenty of time left in 2024, so join in the fun today.
