Volume 35 Kickoff

In January of 2023, Sports Illustrated Kids unveiled an issue of their magazine which included a page with 9 perforated sports cards. One of these is of basketball player Victor Wembanyama.

The Hunt Begins

The magazines were sent to all regular subscription holders, but were also available for purchase within newsstands, grocery stores, and book retailers like Barnes and Noble.

Collectors Buy on eBay

As word got out that Wembanyama’s card included in the magazine could hold historical significance, collectors flocked to eBay to purchase extra copies, frequently paying a multiple times the magazine’s shelf cost.

The magazine would cease production in March, when the No. 2 issue of Sports Illustrated Kids Volume 35 would go into circulation. Residual copies could be found sparsely at retailers for some months following this.

Aftermarket Prices Rise

By April, issues of the magazine began to sell for as high as $150 per copy, with more and more sports card speculators betting on Wembanyama.
