Magic: The Gathering 30th Anniversary Edition Box
Perhaps the most controversial trading card release of all time, this box was heavily criticized by the MTG community for being offensively overpriced. This led many to abstain from its sale, making it quite rare.
Magic: The Cash Grab
On October 4th, Wizards of the Coast shared news that they’d be releasing a set containing remakes of the most iconic cards from MTG’s early sets. The box would contain 4 packs with 15 cards each, and have a retail price of $999.
At 9 AM PST, boxes went live for purchase on MTG’s web store. There was a digital queue-based system for purchase initially, but after 10 minutes there was no wait time to access the sale. There was a limit of 5 boxes per order.
Sold Out? Who knows.
After 39 minutes, the product appeared to be sold out. Notably, MTG’s Twitter account said the sale had “concluded”, rather than say the product was sold out, leading many in the community to speculate that they had pulled the sale to save face from poor sales. However, this has never been confirmed.
Last Minute FOMO Buyers
The day after the sale concluded, a number of confirmed orders sold on eBay for at and around the $1,900 mark, as speculators that were sidelined during the sale got FOMO.
