This heavily-anticipated proof version of the $50 gold American Eagle coin was released in 2020 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. It was limited to a mintage of 1,945 coins, and bears a V75 privy mint mark.
In the wake of pandemic production shutdowns, the US Mint revealed that the 2020-W End of World War II 75th Anniversary American Eagle gold $50 coin would be struck with a mintage of 1,945 coins total.
Release Date Announced
The US mint posted a press release stating that the coin would go for sale on November 5th at 9 AM PST.
Firefox Guest Checkout
At 9:00 AM, the coin went live and chaos ensued due to massive site traffic. While most users were unable to add to cart or complete checkout, an RC Elite member happened to notice that using Firefox with guest checkout on the website allowed for a seamless purchase experience.
Gold Sells Out
This release day saw 2 versions of the coin release — one gold, and one silver. Gold, being the rarest, sold out after roughly 6 minutes, with the vast majority of stock going users of the Firefox browser.
