Key Points

  • Wizards of the Coast will reopen Zeta Set sales on December 9 for 24 hours and fulfill every order

  • Zeta packs retailed for $19.92 and have resold for $60 to $80 over the past few weeks

  • Original buyers can cancel their orders with no explanation by submitting a support ticket by October 9

Magic: The Gathering’s Zeta Set is making headlines. Again. After frustrating collectors and resellers with a messy launch, Wizards of the Coast has announced that the Zeta Set Secret Lair will return to sale in December. Unlike the previous release (or any other recent Secret Lair), the cards will be available to preorder through a 24 hour window with no cap on sales or production. eBay has already recorded hundreds of sales for these packs, but this news threatens that market.

Why is the Zeta Set Being Reprinted?

Wizards posted an update on the Zeta Set sale today, and it’s part apology, part course correction. According to the company, an external service disruption hit the sale’s systems early on, and the team paused the queue to keep orders from failing at checkout.

That pause dragged on for about an extra hour and a half, and once things restarted, only a handful of people got the last of the stock. In the end, many MTG players and collectors were left disappointed. You can read more in our article covering the launch here.

The Zeta Set was MSCHF’s second Secret Lair collab and the first time Secret Lair sold randomized boosters, with seven cards per pack pulled from a pool of 121. The decision to release these as booster packs was controversial, but didn’t hamper demand.

After the messy drop, eBay exploded with presale listings for the Zeta Set. Packs were selling for as much as $80, and 12-pack bundles were flipping for over $700.

Secret Lair Zeta Cards for Sale

On December 9, 2026, the Zeta Set goes back on sale for a single 24 hour window, and WotC says everyone who orders during that window will have their order fulfilled. Reprint orders won’t ship until the second half of 2027, while original orders are still expected to start shipping November 5 in North America and December 8 in Europe and the UK

Supply is the enemy of any flip, and an open print run is about as much supply as you can get. The whole case for Zeta resale value was that Secret Lair doesn’t reprint. Whatever sold in September was supposed to be the only supply that would ever exist, and that’s what kept packs steady in the $60 to $70 range.

How Resellers Are Affected

If you secured a preorder during the initial Zeta Set launch, you’re in a bit of a tricky situation, especially if you already sold your packs on eBay.

WotC will let you cancel your order for a full refund, but only if you submit a ticket by October 9. On the other hand, your eBay buyer can file a dispute up through November 5 and even beyond.

If you already sold your Zeta Set cards, you should reach out to your buyer ASAP and get on the same page as them regarding the upcoming reprint. This is especially true if you sold your cards on eBay before September 10, as this would put you in violation of eBay’s 40-business day policy for presale listings. In this case, eBay will very likely side with your buyer in case of a dispute, and you’ll be left holding up to $240 worth of product that can no longer be returned or refunded. Start the dialogue with your buyer now, while you can still get a refund from WotC.

While your buyer may want to cancel the order outright, remember that the reprinted Zeta Set cards will have long shipping times. Customers that place their orders at the end of the queue could face a 6-12 month wait for their cards, and your buyer may prefer to pay a premium just to get their cards early. Even a discounted sale beats a brick.

If you bought Zeta Set cards to flip but haven’t sold them, you have just over a week to either cancel your order or find a buyer. You are covered under eBay’s presale policy as long as you ship the cards within 40 days, so the risk of a dispute is much lower. That said, prices are likely going to come down in the next few days as news circulates within MTG collector’s circles.

Should You Buy Zeta Set Reprints?

Probably not. An open production run on a high profile set is pretty much a death sentence for its resale market, and you’d be waiting until mid-2027 just to sell into a market full of the same packs. At most, keep an eye on secondary prices in the weeks before December 9. If sellers start dumping packs near retail, collectors who want cards sooner might find a deal.

Bottom Line

This is an unprecedented move for Wizards of the Coast. Collectors are celebrating it as a win against scalpers, and for players who just want to open packs, it is. But one of Secret Lair’s biggest selling points has always been that drops are limited and never reprinted. Wizards walked that back as a PR move and gets to pocket the extra sales from everyone who missed the first drop. Be careful when evaluating future Secret Lair releases, because WotC has shown it’s willing to bend its own rules when it suits them.

The Zeta Set reprint looks the final chapter in Magic’s most controversial release in years. These cards have been plagued with complaints and technical issues from the start, and even drew allegations of insider trading by WotC employees (yes, really). They’ve been lucrative, or at least, they were lucrative before today; but they’ve also been a significant headache for collectors, resellers, and certainly WotC.
