Key Points

  • iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB and climbs to $3,199 for the 2TB model

  • Preorders open October 16 at 5am Pacific with in-hand availability starting October 23

  • Recent iPhone launches have sold out and flipped for prices above retail, but the market usually crashes quickly

Apple’s first major hardware innovation in years is launching soon. Like other Apple innovations, it means slapping their logo on someone else’s work, cleaning up the contours, and jacking the price way up. The iPhone Duo is the company’s first ever folding design, and it’s attracting attention from consumers across the globe. Additionally, there are some regulatory issues that might delay the phone’s launch in China. If you remember how Apple rolled out the iPhone Air last year, you can see the opportunity for resellers.

Apple iPhone Duo Details

The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable, running the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro lineup with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer screen.

All of the latest bells and whistles are packed in here, including Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. Apple’s engineers have been working on the folding screen for years, and it boasts extreme durability without compromising on image quality or usability.

The launch is being treated like Apple’s first major innovation in years, and it’s poised to test if consumers are ready to put their money where their mouth is. For those that have been sitting on their “good enough” older models for a few generations, the iPhone Duo is real reason for an upgrade.

It comes in Star White and Night Sky, in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations. Preorders open Friday, October 16 at 5am PT, with phones shipping and hitting stores on October 23.

Will the Folding iPhone Resell?

This isn’t a limited edition release. It’s a mainline flagship with four storage tiers sold through Apple’s normal channels, which means we have no idea yet whether preorder slots will sell out in minutes or sit available for weeks. The phones are also releasing globally on October 23, so resellers won’t have an arbitrage opportunity to flip to overseas customers (more on this below).

If there’s a flip here, history says it’ll be early and it’ll favor the top-end configurations, since first-run Apple hardware tends to see the biggest day-one premiums before supply catches up. Apple’s standard 14 day return window covers you if you preorder and can’t find a buyer in time, which meaningfully caps your downside. That said, Apple’s sales terms explicitly reserve the right to cancel orders it suspects are meant for resale, and to limit purchase quantities, so don’t get greedy on order counts.

We saw resellers turn a solid profit on early iPhone 17 preorders last year, especially the beefed-up Pro Max models. The $2,000 phones were flipping for as much as $3,500 shortly after preorders opened.

iPhone 17 Pro Max for Sale

Like other hyped iPhone releases, the market for them crashed quickly as supply caught up with demand. This is not something that you can afford to sit on. The goal is to secure a preorder and flip as quickly as possible to someone with too much money and not enough self control.

Will the iPhone Duo Launch in China?

Yes, but with some caveats.

China’s spot in the October 23 launch wave might not hold. The Duo is eSIM only everywhere, with no physical SIM tray in any country, and Chinese carriers need a special government license before they’re allowed to sell a phone that works that way. That approval has a track record of showing up late.

This exact situation played out last year with the iPhone Air. Apple listed China in its initial launch wave, then pulled it days before release, replacing the country’s product page with a vague “release information will be updated later” while China Unicom, China Mobile and China Telecom waited on regulators to sign off. The iPhone Air’s China rollout was delayed by nearly a month due to this, and there were reports of Chinese buyers purchasing phones in Hong Kong and from overseas sellers for seriously inflated prices during the delay.

China is still listed for October 23 in Apple’s own materials for the iPhone Duo. But given that this is the second eSIM only iPhone Apple has ever shipped and the first one hit this exact wall, it’s entirely possible we’ll see another delay.

If China does get pulled at the last minute, it creates an opportunity for resellers. A delay there while the rest of the world gets phones on schedule creates a short window where units bought through the US, UK, or other on-time markets could carry a premium for buyers in China who don’t want to wait out a second regulatory process.

Keep an eye on Apple’s China product page in the days leading up to October 23. If the release date disappears, that’s your signal.
