Key Points

  • The coin restocked today for the first time since selling out in May and sold out again within minutes

  • Individual coins are reselling for around $3 each while graded examples have sold for $15 to $30

  • The Mint priced 25-coin rolls at $61 and 100-coin bags at $154.50 with no household order limit

Back in May, the Mint’s California American Innovation dollar featuring a young Steve Jobs sold out before most collectors even got a browser tab open. Today it happened again: a surprise restock landed on the Mint’s website, and it was gone almost as fast as it appeared. If you caught it, you’re sitting on real money. If you didn’t, here’s what just happened and what your coins might actually be worth.

California American Innovations "Steve Jobs" Coins

The American Innovation $1 Coin Program has been running since 2018, honoring innovators state by state. California’s entry, released this year, puts a young Steve Jobs on the reverse, seated in front of the oak covered hills that supposedly shaped his design philosophy, with the inscription “Make Something Wonderful” underneath. It’s paired with the series’ usual Statue of Liberty obverse, plus a Liberty Bell “250” privy mark for the country’s semiquincentennial.

When it first launched on May 12, the California dollar sold out in about 11 minutes, and it wasn’t close. Rolls and bags for three other states released the same day (Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota) stuck around considerably longer. Steve Jobs and Apple fandom did what a Statue of Liberty design alone couldn’t.

That’s what makes today’s restock notable. The Mint doesn’t typically bring back a sold out American Innovation product, and there was no announcement ahead of time. Resellers who happened to be checking got a second shot, and it didn’t last. Coin news outlets are reporting the 25-coin rolls sold out in around 10 minutes, with the 100-coin bags following about 20 minutes later. Both were priced the same as the original run: $61 for rolls, $154.50 for bags.

Individual coins are trading hands for around $3 apiece on the resale market, which puts a 100-coin bag’s contents at roughly $300 in aggregate value before fees. After eBay’s cut, that works out to about $259 in hand, netting a profit of around $105 on a $154.50 bag. That’s a solid return for a same-day flip, though it’s worth being honest that it’s closer to a 68% gain than a literal doubling of your money.

The 25-coin roll math is a lot thinner. Twenty-five coins at $3 each comes to $75, and after fees that’s about $65 back on a $61 purchase, a profit of under $4. If you only managed to grab a roll, don’t expect this one to move the needle much on its own.

Graded copies are where the real upside lives. PCGS and PSA slabbed examples in high grades have sold for $15 to $30 each, meaning a handful of well struck coins pulled for grading can outperform an entire ungraded bag. That takes time and grading fees though, so it’s a longer play than a quick flip.

Bottom Line

This isn’t a life changing flip, but the 100-coin bags turned a real profit for very little effort. The coins aren’t marked as bullion or final sale, so buyers who can’t move theirs generally aren’t stuck without options the way they would be with some numismatic products. If the Mint restocks a third time, moving fast is the whole game, since this one has proven it can vanish in under 20 minutes twice now.
