Key Points

  • The RLC Exclusive 1988 Porsche 911 Targa Turbo retailed for $33, limited to two per customer

  • Standard versions are reselling for around $70, while Chase variants are fetching $500 on the secondary market

  • Chase variants are limited to 5,000 numbered units worldwide and were randomly inserted into orders

What if we told you that you could have made up to $1,000 from a single $66 purchase? Too good to be true? Maybe, because you’d need to be pretty damn lucky. But even the standard Hot Wheels 911 Targas are flipping for solid profits, and the chance to snag a Chase variant lit a fire under collectors to buy these up as quick as they could. Here’s how it went down.

Hot Wheels RLC 911 Targa Release

The 1988 Porsche 911 Targa Turbo, better known to enthusiasts by its factory codename “930,” is one of the most beloved Porsches of its era. The air-cooled turbocharged flat-six, the wide body, the iconic whale tail spoiler — the 930 has been a poster car for generations of gearheads. This particular model year also introduced the removable targa top, which is why Hot Wheels chose it for their first-ever casting of this variant.

The standard version comes in Spectraflame brown with Real Riders Fifteen52 Outlaw wheels, a ZAMAC die-cast body with a functioning rear engine cover, and a removable targa top. The Chase version takes all of that and wraps it in premium pure chrome plating with an individually numbered sticker on special packaging. Both come in acrylic cases inside decorative slipcovers.

Red Line Club Porsche 911 Targa Chase

The Red Line Club (RLC) is Hot Wheels’ collector membership program, and these drops are exclusive to members. The 911 Targa was a member-only release with a hard limit of two per customer. RLC memberships are just $10 yearly and give access to juicy opportunities like this on the regular.

The Three-Way Market for 911 Targas

Here’s where it gets interesting for resellers. The 911 Targa created three distinct price tiers in the secondary market, each representing a different buyer.

The standard opened version sits around $70, roughly double retail after eBay fees. That’s a solid flip for something that retailed at $33, but not exactly a life-changing margin. The real money is in the other two tiers.

Unopened boxes are trading between $90 and $100, frequently listed as “Chase chance” by sellers who never opened theirs. These listings exist because buyers are willing to pay a premium for the possibility of pulling a Chase variant, just like ripping a pack of cards in hope of a grail.

Hot Wheels 911 Targa for Sale

Then there are the Chase variants themselves, which are landing around $500 on the secondary market. With only 5,000 numbered units worldwide, this is a rare and desirable option for collectors. This is one of the more extreme standard-to-Chase value gaps we’ve seen in the Hot Wheels collector space in a while.

Bottom Line

The smartest play with a two-pack limit was almost certainly to flip both cars unopened at $90 to $100 each, netting around $113 to $141 after eBay fees on a $66 total investment. Clean, low-risk, no drama.

But knowing you might have a $500 Chase sitting in that box is not easy to ignore. Crack one open and you’ve either turned $33 into roughly $435 after fees, or you’re holding a $70 flip. The odds aren’t in your favor given the scale of production versus total units sold, but the asymmetry is exactly what makes these Chase drops compelling.

If you bought two, the hedged move was to open one and keep one sealed. You get your lottery ticket and preserve some resale value either way.

The Chase concept has clearly found an audience. The 930 is a car people actually care about, Chase scarcity is real, and the sealed-box lottery mechanic created energy at every price tier.

Hot Wheels has used Chase variants in their mainline for years, but applying the format to RLC Exclusives at this price point is newer territory. If this drop is any indication, future RLC Chase releases are worth paying attention to. Keep an eye on the RLC launch calendar.
