Key Points

  • The bundle retails for $350 and includes a branded Chromatic handheld, headphones, and limited edition packaging

  • No explicit production numbers announced, but everything points to a small batch release

  • Currently available exclusively through ModRetro’s website with 30 day returns

The original GameBoy was known for its brick-like durability, but what if you wanted to take that to another level? What if you wanted to give it ceramic armor plating and a sapphire screen cover to ward off scratches? You’d get the Anduril Chromatic, a limited edition collaboration between ModRetro and Anduril Industries. These are available right now, so let’s take a closer look.

Anduril X ModRetro Porta Pro Bundle

Here’s where it gets interesting. Palmer Luckey, the guy who founded Oculus VR and now runs Anduril Industries (yes, the company that made those helmets with cat ears), actually started the ModRetro forum back in 2009. Before he was building billion-dollar tech companies, he was just a kid posting about handheld mods on gaming forums.

Fast forward to 2024, and ModRetro released the Chromatic, a GameBoy-inspired retro handheld designed to compete with the Analogue Pocket. Now they’re doing this Anduril-branded bundle, which honestly feels like the most niche nostalgia play of the year. You’ve got defense tech branding on a retro gaming device paired with headphones that audiophiles have loved since the 1980s.

Anduril GameBoy Chromatic ModRetro

The Chromatic itself plays original GameBoy and GameBoy Color cartridges on modern hardware with an FPGA chip for accuracy. Think of it as ModRetro’s answer to the Analogue Pocket, but with Anduril branding because why not. The Koss Porta Pros are solid vintage-style headphones that retail around $50 normally, known for their collapsible design and surprisingly good sound.

The packaging is where the “limited edition” part comes in. We’re guessing the special Anduril branding and presentation is what’s driving the exclusivity here, not necessarily the core products themselves.

Will the Anduril Chromatic Resell?

Let’s be honest about the resale potential here. This bundle sits in a weird spot. On one hand, you’ve got the tech collector angle with Palmer Luckey’s connection and the Anduril branding. On the other hand, the Chromatic hasn’t exactly dominated the retro handheld market the way the Analogue Pocket has.

The Analogue Pocket retailed for $220 and has seen some secondary market action when restocks sell out, typically hitting $300-350. We’ve covered their releases a few times now, and limited edition variants have been extremely lucrative flips.

The Chromatic is less established, which makes predicting demand tricky. Add in the Anduril branding, and you’re betting on a very specific collector demographic who cares about both retro gaming AND Palmer Luckey’s various ventures.

That said, these qualify for thirty day returns and refunds under ModRetro’s standard policy, along with free shipping. That mitigates most of the risk for resellers, and there’s a real chance these will sell out soon.

Bottom Line

The Chromatic itself hasn’t proven to be a must-have device compared to the Analogue Pocket, which limits the floor on resale value. If this doesn’t sell out or generate buzz, you could be sitting on inventory if you don’t return it in time.

This is a speculative flip for tech collectors and Palmer Luckey fans, not a guaranteed money-maker. If you’re already into retro gaming handhelds or have buyers lined up, it might be worth grabbing one. But don’t expect Analogue Pocket-level demand unless Anduril’s branding really resonates with collectors. The story behind it is cool, but cool stories don’t always translate to profit margins.
