Key Points

  • SR-71 PlaneTags retail for around $60 and drop December 2 with early access for mailing list subscribers

  • July’s SR-71 release is currently reselling for $150 to $300 on eBay depending on thickness and variation

  • Previous SR-71 drops sold out within days, with the first edition in 2019 commanding up to $2,000 on secondary markets

The most sought-after PlaneTag ever is coming back. PlaneTags is restocking their SR-71 Blackbird design on December 2, but you need to get on their mailing list right now to secure early access before these sell out in minutes. Certain variants will sell for more, but there’s a potential to make serious profit with a little luck.

Why SR-71 PlaneTags Are So Valuable

The SR-71 Blackbird is aviation royalty. This Cold War spy plane still holds speed records and represents the pinnacle of American aerospace engineering. Aviation collectors treat SR-71 memorabilia like sneakerheads treat OG Jordans.

PlaneTags makes collectible keychains from genuine aircraft skin, and the SR-71 is their holy grail. These tags are cut from actual SR-71 stabilizers, meaning supply is permanently limited. When PlaneTags runs out of SR-71 material, that’s it forever.

This December restock comes from SR-71A #61-7971, the same aircraft used in July’s release. Those tags immediately became some of the most valuable in PlaneTags’ catalog. The company tracked down additional material after relentless demand from collectors who missed earlier drops.

SR 71 Plane Tag Confirmed Restock December

PlaneTags is using mailing list early access, giving subscribers 24-48 hours of exclusive purchasing before general release. If you’re not on the list, you’re missing this completely.

PlaneTags offers multiple variations: thin exterior skin, medium thickness, thick structural sections, and interior core pieces. Thick sections with honeycomb structure are the money plays because they’re rarer and more visually distinctive.

Low serial numbers under 100 also command premiums. If you can choose during checkout, grab the lowest available. Consider buying multiple variations if limits allow since selling as a set could bring premium pricing.

Sign up at their SR-71 landing page now. The notification might only give you a few hours warning before early access opens. Have your payment info saved in your PlaneTags account for one-click checkout.

PlaneTags don’t accept returns on limited editions. If you can’t flip it, you own a $60 keychain. Given SR-71 history though, this seems unlikely. July’s release maintained strong pricing five months later.

Shipping takes 4-6 weeks, meaning you won’t have physical inventory until January. This delays flipping but also means less immediate competition.

The Bottom Line

This is the last confirmed SR-71 restock from aircraft #61-7971. The SR-71’s legendary status makes these tags essentially future-proof for aviation collectors.

Still not convinced? Check our coverage from PlaneTag’s drop from last month. They worked with Jimmy Buffett’s estate to produce a limited run of PlaneTags made from the skin of his plane Hemisphere Dancer, and these flipped for over $1,500 at a time.

This drop probably won’t go to quite the same numbers, but it goes to show that PlaneTags collectors will pull up and spend heavy for the right product.

Sign up for early access today at the PlaneTags landing page. Missing early access means missing the drop entirely. With July’s release still commanding $150 to $300 five months later, the December restock should follow the same trajectory.
