Key Points

  • CS2 skin markets have been topsy-turvy following last week’s update

  • Coveted items have fallen over 80% in just a few days

  • Many traders believe the market reaction is overblown, and are buying the dip

You’ve heard it before: be greedy when others are fearful. There have been a lot of changes in the last week for longtime CS skin traders, but many newly crafted skins and gloves have become tradeable in the last 24 hours. If you’ve already got skin(s) in the game or you’re looking to invest, today might be the best time to get in. Just to be clear, things are very volatile, but that means individual gains can be extremely lucrative. Let’s check it out.

CS2 Crafted Knives Become Tradable

First, we have to give a little backstory. If you’re a reader that’s already familiar with the CS2 skin market and the recent update, feel free to skip down a few paragraphs. Otherwise, check out our full coverage here for a deeper dive into what’s changed over the last week.

Here’s a quick TL:DR: Around midnight on October 24, Valve pushed an update for CS2 that allowed players to craft knives and gloves. Prior to this change, these items could only be pulled from in-game lootboxes.

CS2 (and CS:GO before it) had a massive market for these items specifically because of how hard they were to obtain. Opening a lootbox, or crate, required buying a key. Pulling a knife or glove had extremely low odds, so gamers put a premium on them.

And because Valve established an in-game trading system, CS players have been buying and selling skins for more than a decade. What had been an established market was completely overturned with last week’s update.

We tracked the prices for popular knives and gloves that crashed overnight, but there was an important caveat: since July, all CS2 trades had a 7-day hold period before the trade goes through. This was put in place to fight against hackers, but it had a knock-on effect for new developments like these.

CS2 Skin Market Today

Most veteran traders were expecting a massive market crash today. Obviously, the update heralded a huge shakeup as holders began liquidating their stock, but many more were holding out for the knives and gloves to become tradeable and actually hit third party exchanges.

In reality, we’ve seen a huge dropoff in prices followed by a quick resurgence. Many sellers panicked, but their items were bought up by a significant speculator class eager to take profits on a shaky market.

You can draw a lot of conclusions from this, but the simplest may be that many players are buying these new knives at rock bottom prices simply to play with them. Rather than established collector’s items, it’s looking like the new market for knives might just be actual gamers.

As you can see from the Xeet above, it’s actually not all doom and gloom for investors. Yes, a (hypothetical and hyperbolic) 2X in market size is not ideal, but theoretically that just results in 50% lower prices assuming that every single existing Covert skin is converted into a knife (probably not what will happen).

Last week’s update was a shock to the market to be sure, but far from a death knell. Panicking sellers drove the market down, but there were plenty of clever buyers who passed high school math and recognized the opportunity emerging.

So, what now? The expiring trade hold means that many new knives and gloves are coming onto the market. The smart move is investing in items with the biggest dip, especially through foreign marketplaces.

Let us explain. As CS2 is a global game, there are several established marketplaces for skins. BUFF and YouPin are some of the biggest Chinese platforms for the game, and their markets have responded significantly faster to the update than comparable western markets.

Smart resellers leveraged this gap by purchasing knives with the biggest popularity/price ratio through Chinese sellers and flipping them to western buyers. Even by selling below established market prices, sellers secured decent profits via digital arbitrage.

Huge disclaimer here: this market is volatile across the board. Last week’s update has completely shattered expectations for serious CS2 skin traders, and it’s impossible to make any concrete estimations for what happens next. While it’s possible to make a profit on what we’ve discussed, it’s equally possible to lose money on speculative investments. Be cautious, and be aware that you’re taking major risks on every dollar you put into this market.

That’s pretty much all we have to say. Most of the information for this article was provided by a knowledgeable RC Elite member (you know who you are). Hopefully it can be helpful to folks looking to invest in a market with considerable potential.
