Key Points

  • Sora 2 launched September 30 as an invite-only iOS app generating AI video with sound in the US and Canada.

  • Invite codes have sold for $11 to $45 on eBay with over 30 completed sales already and new users receive 4 invite codes

  • Resellers are farming codes and turning easy profits from their computer

OpenAI dropped its Sora 2 video generation app Tuesday, and less than 48 hours later, the invite codes are already flipping on eBay. We’re not talking huge money here, but resellers have discovered a clever loop to turn quick profits with minimal effort.

OpenAI Launches Sora 2

Sora 2 is OpenAI’s latest attempt at AI video generation, and this time they’re going full TikTok with it. The app lets you create 10-second videos from text prompts or photos, complete with audio. The standout feature is called “Cameos” where you can drop yourself or friends into AI-generated scenes after recording a quick video and audio verification.

OpenAI is rolling this out invite-only to manage server load and gather feedback. Each new user gets 4 invite codes to share with friends. That design choice is what created this resale market.

The company launched Sora 2 as what they’re calling “the GPT-3.5 moment for video.” The original Sora from February 2024 was rough but revolutionary. Sora 2 is supposed to be significantly better at physics, object permanence, and realistic movement. If a basketball player misses a shot in Sora 2, the ball bounces off the backboard instead of magically teleporting to the hoop like earlier models would do.

How to Loop Sora 2 Invite Codes

Here’s how people are turning this into a profit stream. A 404 Media journalist tested it and confirmed the method works. Buy one invite code on eBay for around $12. Use that code to create your Sora account. The moment you’re in, you receive 4 new invite codes. Sell 3 of those codes for $15-20 each. Use the 4th code to create another account and repeat.

Some sellers on social media are claiming they’ve moved hundreds of codes already. The math checks out if you’re willing to grind through creating multiple accounts. One code for $12 turns into 3 codes you can sell for $15-20 each, netting you $33-48 profit per cycle before fees.

OpenAI Sora 2 Invite codes reselling on eBay

If you’ve got some free time tonight, why not make a little money before this method gets patched?

OpenAI posted a warning in their official Sora 2 Discord server saying selling codes violates their terms of service. Their usage terms state users cannot “modify, copy, lease, sell or distribute any of our Services.” But enforcement is unclear, and codes are still actively trading.

eBay’s policy says “Software keys the seller is not authorized to sell” cannot be sold on the platform. When Business Insider asked eBay if Sora invite codes fall under this policy, they didn’t get a response. So far, listings are staying up and sales are completing.

Is This Worth Going For?

First, a little disclaimer. This is different from most opportunities we cover because the “””ethics””” are murky and you’re definitely violating OpenAI’s terms if you sell codes. We’re not here to yuck anyone’s yum, but you should know what you’re getting into.

The resale market exists because OpenAI captured legitimate hype. Sora was the third most downloaded free app on Apple’s App Store as of Wednesday afternoon, trailing only ChatGPT and Google Gemini. People genuinely want access to test AI video generation, and scarcity creates demand.

Xitter is buzzing with people searching “Sora 2 invite code” trying to find free shares. Discord communities are trading codes. Medium articles are popping up with step-by-step guides on how to get access. The hype is real enough that major outlets like TechCrunch, The Verge, and Business Insider all covered the launch.

Obviously, the profit margins aren’t amazing here compared to typical reselling opportunities we cover. $27 per farming cycle is decent if you’re already at your computer and can move through the process quickly. But this requires creating multiple accounts, managing codes, and dealing with potential platform bans.

Remember that OpenAI explicitly prohibits selling access to their services. Your account could get banned at any time. eBay might crack down on these listings if OpenAI pushes them. The codes could stop working if OpenAI changes their invite system. Demand could crater once more people get organic access.

There’s no refund if a code doesn’t work. Buyers have to trust sellers will deliver working codes.

This is a modest profit opportunity with clear terms-of-service violations and uncertain longevity. If you’re already interested in trying Sora 2, getting in early and selling your extra codes makes sense. If you’re just in it for the money, the farming loop works but requires grinding through account creation and carries ban risk.

We’re covering this because it’s happening and resellers are talking about it, but we’re not exactly equipped or inclined to recommend violating platform terms. Make your own call on whether $27 per farming cycle is worth the hassle and risk.
