Topps Chrome SpongeBob Collection is a Great Flip

If you didn’t know, Topps doesn’t just make trading cards for major sports. They also produce collections for various hobbies, movies, comics, and even SpongeBob.

The first and last time the brands collaborated was in 2009, producing a 90 card base set featuring characters from the show and limited sketch variants from some of the storyboarders.

Now they’ve revived the idea for 2025. The Topps Chrome SpongeBob set released earlier this week as a 200 card base set for the show’s 25th anniversary. Like other Chrome sets, this included numerous rare variants and special parallels. You can check out the full list here.

Also included were special sketch cards and even autographs from the show’s cast and producers. Topps sold these SpongeBob cards in three ways: Value Boxes for $40 with 28 cards, Hobby Boxes for $250 with 60 cards, and Cases for $3,000 with 12 Boxes (60 cards in total).

The Hobby Boxes and Cases were sold exclusively through an EQL raffle, while the Value Boxes could be purchased directly through Topps. The entire collection went live on September 2 at 9 A.M. PDT.

It seems like there’s a lot of crossover between adult SpongeBob fans and adult card collectors, because this collection was a massive hit. From the EQL raffle to Topps’ own site, everything sold out fast.

And now these cards have reappeared on eBay. Topps Chrome SpongeBob collection is reselling for serious profits right now, with most resellers flipping the cards for around double what they paid. Hobby Boxes are selling for around $400 while sealed Cases have flipped for up to $6,000.

That’s not exactly what we were expecting, but it’s more than we were hoping. This was an excellent flip for anyone that got in on it, especially if you were able to pick up a Hobby Case. Obviously there was an element of luck here due to the EQL raffle, but sometimes you just need to roll the dice.
