We’re still a few months out from the release of Gearbox Studios’ Borderlands 4, which makes now the perfect time to pick up a collector’s edition. These were revealed a few days ago and picked up considerable flak online as gamers realized the $150 bundle did not include a copy of the game. Video game collector’s editions can be quite profitable, and while game-less versions are uncommon, we’ve seen them resell. Let’s take a closer look.

Borderlands 4 Echo-4 Bundle

Are you excited for Borderlands 4? It’s been over five years since the last mainline game in the series, so Borderlands fans are definitely hungry. Randy Pitchford and the rest of the team at Gearbox have been hard at work, and Borderlands 4 is set for release in September.

They could probably use the money. Last year’s Borderlands movie was a massive flop, grossing $33 million against a $120 million budget, although Take Two executives noted that the film’s released coincided with a boost in game sales.

And what better way to make money than a collector’s edition? By releasing a bundle of overpriced merch and slapping a “limited edition” label on it, publishers can shake their fans down for every last penny.

Borderlands 4 Collector’s Editions were revealed earlier this week, listed exclusively through GameStop as the Echo-4 Bundle. Notably, these bundles do not include a copy of Borderlands 4, and are instead a collection of bonus merch for $150.

The Borderlands 4 Echo-4 Bundle includes an 8″ statuette of the robot Echo-4, a cloth map of the game world Kairos, codes for in-game keys, a small necklace, and four double-sided lithograph art cards.

Will Borderlands 4 Collector's Editions Resell?

Good question. The decision to omit an actual copy of the game with the collector’s edition is raising some fan’s eyebrows, but it’s not unheard of.

In 2018, Rockstar released Red Dead Redemption 2 and several premium variants ranging from $70 to $100. They spun off the physical collectibles into a separate $100 “Collector’s Box” that did not include a copy of the game. These ended up reselling for around $500 and continue to resell today.

Gearbox and Take Two are taking a similar path with Borderlands 4 by selling these Echo-4 Bundles for $150 alongside a “Super Deluxe” edition of Borderlands 4 for $130. Physical and digital content is evenly split between the products, meaning a fan will need to drop $280 to get the complete Borderlands 4 Collector’s Edition.

That’s pretty steep, even for a modern game. While $250 or even $300 isn’t out of the question for a AAA collector’s edition, we’d expect a bit more content to justify that price. There’s only a handful of items in the Echo-4 Bundle, and the statue is fairly small compared to others we’ve seen.

In the end, the success of these bundles will hinge on the success of the game. Early reviews for Borderlands 4 have begun trickling in, with most outlets giving it praise. We’re still a ways out from launch, but what we’ve seen is promising.

And as a preorder item, the risk is fairly minimal. You can simply cancel your order before it ships and get a refund if these don’t end up reselling. Additionally, GameStop offers refunds for collector’s editions within 7 days of their delivery.
