Preorders for the Astro Bot PS5 controller are sold out
They retailed for $80 and are flipping for upwards of $120
A restock may be on the way
Sony has recently revealed a special version of their DualSense controller based on the upcoming game “Astro Bot”. With a distinct color scheme and the character’s eyes front and center, this is a clever way to tie in one of Sony’s most anticipated releases. After several sold out presales, resellers have begun listing their orders for significantly over MSRP. It’s possible more of these will be sold ahead of the game’s release, so don’t hesitate to order.
While we all know there’s plenty of money to be made reselling video games, resellers have made plenty of cash flipping video game peripherals. Consoles are obvious, but there are also cosmetic items like custom controllers and console skins that do well on eBay.
Last year we covered the surprisingly successful PlayStation Portal. Widely mocked upon its reveal, preorders for these would sell out and go on to resell just before its release. Resellers made plenty of easy money just by flipping a glorified controller.
And now we’re looking at another opportunity. With the release of its first-party exclusive “Astro Bot” in September, Sony has revealed a limited-edition Astro Bot themed controller for the PlayStation 5.
This is a pretty cool product. If you don’t know much about it, “Astro Bot” is a 3D platform developed by Team Asobi. Many of the game’s mechanics and minigames revolve around clever utilization of the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.
There is also another feature in the game called ‘feel the wall’. You can see a gold wall and Astro can run his hands against it, and you can feel the change of texture in the DualSense as he goes from smooth to rough and then smooth again. Then you go back to the rough part, push it, and it’s a secret passage.
So a commemorative controller is a great idea. The Astro Bot PlayStation controller costs $80, but preorders are currently closed. These have sold out through the PlayStation store, Walmart and Target in recent weeks.
“Astro Bot” is scheduled for a September 6 release. With how popular these controllers have been online, it’s entirely possible that Sony will produce an additional run of Astro Bot DualSense controllers.
And that’s good news if you missed out. Since the preorders have sold out, resellers have been having an absolute field day flipping them on eBay, and more stock will just mean more sales.
Right now, an Astro Bot controller is reselling for upwards of $120. We’ve recorded tons of confirmed sales through eBay in the last week, with some early sellers managing to get nearly $200 for theirs.
At $80 a pop from the retailer, resellers stand to make a very respectable $40 in profit at a time by flipping these. And as a preorder, these are essentially risk-free; if the market doesn’t pan out and they end up bricking, just cancel the preorder for a full refund.
As we said, it’s possible that the Astro Bot PS5 controllers will restock soon. Keep a close eye out for more stock being loaded, and don’t hesitate to preorder if you get the opportunity.
