Pokemon Center dropped a Sleeping Cubone plushie this month
The Pokemon has a small tear in its eye as a nod to its backstory
Fans are buying them for double or more what they retailed for
Want to feel sad? Earlier this week, Pokemon Center sold a new Cubone plush as part of their Sleeping Pokemon collection. One of the details of this plush is small tear in the corner of Cubone’s eye as a direct reference to the Pokemon’s dead mother. Oof. In any case, these plushes were extremely popular, and sold out through the Pokemon Center website. Now they are reselling for around double what they retailed for. Let’s take a look.
If you’re an oldhead or you’ve read the Pokedex entry for Cubone, you’d know that the large skull the Pokemon wears on its head is its mother’s. Kind of dark for a kid’s game sure, but this was also the same generation that had Lavender Town.
In any case, Pokemon Center has capitalized on the sad story behind Cubone with a new plush. These 12″ soft plushes are part of a new line of sleeping plushes sold by the company. Pretty innocent at first glance, but if you look closer you’ll notice that the Cubone plushes have a small tear in their eyes.
The description for the plush explicitly states why: “Dozing on its side with a tear in its eye as it dreams of its mother, this plush was made for naptime—and cuddles!”
Again, kind of dark, but also kind of cute. And there’s probably a lot of Pokemon fans out there that would like a chance to cheer a Cubone up.
The Sleeping Cubone plush was sold for $30 through the Pokemon Center website before quickly selling out. All of the sleeping Pokemon plushes have been very popular with fans, but it seems like the Cubone has taken it to the next level.
Fortunately, whenever there’s a popular product struggling to remain in stock, there are resellers eager to make the problem worse. These Sleeping Cubones have been so popular with Pokemon fans that they have begun to seek them out from resellers for a significant premium over retail.
Right now, a Sleeping Cubone plush is reselling for between $50 and $60. At $30 retail, these plushes were an opportunity for a quick-fingered reseller to potentially double their money in a few clicks.
And it’s not like these are a one time only drop either. Sleeping Cubone plushes have restocked several times this month, and they are still selling out. Keep an eye on their page, and don’t hesitate to buy if you seem them in stock.
