Pokémon x Fossil Gengar Watch

A collaboration between Pokémon and Fossil, this Gengar-themed watch was limited to just 1,300 units worldwide.

In September 2022, the Pokemon Company announced a special collaboration with the watchmaker Fossil. The capsule collection featured a wide variety of watches, split between affordable daily wear and exclusive collector’s pieces. One of these, the Fossil Gengar Watch, caught the eyes of fans and sold out quickly. Over time, these watches have gone on to appreciate considerably, and they now resell for well over retail.

What is the Pokemon Fossil watch collaboration?

For the last nine months, American watch manufacturer Fossil has been producing a set of Pokemon themed watches. These sell directly through the Pokemon Center webstore, and are fairly popular. Fossil Pokemon watch designs include the Kanto starters Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander for $150.

In addition to these standard watches, two other designs were produced in limited numbers. The first featured Gengar, while the second had an assortment of Pokemon on the face, dubbed the First Partners watch. It’s the Fossil Gengar Watch we’ll be looking at today, as this was the big seller of the collaboration.

Unlike the rest of the watches from the set, the Gengar and First Partners watches were limited to a total of 1,300 units. They were available to buy the day of the announcement, and were listed for sale on the Pokemon Center website.

After going live at 8 A.M. PST, the Fossil Gengar watches sold out in under two hours. They have not restocked since.

How much did the Pokemon Fossil watches cost?

Standard watches from the collaboration cost $150. The Fossil Pokemon watches featuring Gengar and First Partners were $300. There were no discounts or sales available.

All the watches from the collaboration are quartz watches.

Gengar Pokemon Fossil watches start reselling

After the sale ended in September, many fans were left disappointed. Remember, only 1,300 of these were sold, not nearly enough to go around. It didn’t take long for people to start listing their Gengar Fossil Pokemon watches for sale.

In the days that followed, a number of watches changed hands for around $500. Not at all bad, being $200 in easy profit. By October though, the average price had risen to nearly $1,000. Many watches were sold at or slightly above this price, and has since become the de facto price for a Gengar watch.

And that’s what these watches resell for today. In the intervening months, the price for a Gengar Fossil Pokemon watch has remained strong, and there are still regular sales trickling in.

It may seem surprising or hard to believe, but there’s a considerable market for these kinds of novelty watches. We’ve written about the Swatch X Dragon Ball Z collaboration that produced a limited run of nine watches in a collection. Even though the complete set retailed for $1,000, resellers still managed to make a profit flipping watches to eager fans.

Of course, anything with a Pokemon logo stamped on it is popular too. Previous Pokemon collaborations with Bear Walker and Squishmallow are proof that fans of the franchise will eat up anything Pokemon related with gusto.
