To celebrate Mario Day, LEGO announced a Super Mario collaboration, featuring a promotional set of commemorative coins. Starting on March 10th, anyone could receive a set of the coins for free, just by asking for them at any LEGO store location.

The promotion ended after three days, it was ultimately very easy to acquire this coin during the promotion, with many resellers stocking up on multiples of this coin set.

eBay sales for the coin set began occurring frequently in the months following the release. One notable seller reportedly sold 50+ coin sets, netting over $1500 in sales from an item that was completely free. These coins were selling for an average price of $25 in January 2023.
