Wolverine X Halo: The Master Chief Boot

Only 117 Made. Based on Wolverine's existing “Hellcat” design, these boots feature several Halo-themed elements.

2022 saw the first legendary collaboration between Wolverine and Microsoft: The Wolverine X Halo Master Chief Boot. The boots were designed to be durable and robust, and were limited to just 117 pairs. News spread fast, and they sold out in less than a minute at $225 per pair. Resellers were quick to place pairs up on the aftermarket, and recorded sales upwards of $600. The shoe’s tasteful yet functional design and extreme rarity proved to be a winning combination, making them one of the most profitable items to resell last year.

What is Wolverine?

Wolverine is a company with a long history of producing durable workwear. With some of their designs debuting 100+ years ago, the company takes pride in their craftsmanship. While they are primarily known for their work boots, they also produce outdoor wear, hats and gloves, and hiking boots.

Despite their stout reputation, Wolverine products are not known to resell. This is because they are usually quite well-produced, and intended for everyday use, rather than collecting. While other traditionally work-oriented brands like Carhartt and Timberland have seen recent popularity in streetwear circles, Wolverine remains mostly off the radar.

What is the Wolverine x Halo Boot?

Officially titled the “Master Chief Boot”, these boots were part of a limited collaboration with Microsoft, publisher of the acclaimed Halo video game series. Since Halo Infinite’s launch in late 2021, Halo has seen a resurgence in popular culture, with a new live-action TV show debuting in 2022.

After Halo fans pointed out similarities between Wolverine’s new “Hellcat” boot and Master Chief’s armor, Wolverine and Microsoft began collaborating. Largely drawing from the existing Hellcat design, the Master Chief Boot features plenty of nods to the iconic protagonist. From the obvious “117” badge near the ankle and the olive drab coloration, to the more subtle “UNSC” printed on the sole.

Premium leather and materials would be incorporated in the shoe, as well as the company’s patented Ultraspring technology for a lighter step. To underscore the prestige of the boot, only 117 pairs in total would be sold.

Master Chief’s voice actor Steve Downes got a pair of the boots to show off. Saving the world a few times has its perks it would seem.

Why did the Halo Boot Resell?

It was clear from the beginning that the Master Chief Boot would be extremely popular. The high quality combined with extreme scarcity meant that people would need to act fast to secure a pair. Even diehard fans were wondering how to resell their pairs, after seeing the incredible prices posted on social media.

First unveiled on March 25th, the initial social media announcement was met with great attention, and Halo fans were eagerly awaiting its release just 4 days later. While we have no way of knowing just how many people attempted to buy a pair, we do know that it sold out fast.

Like, really fast.

Wolverine’s inexperience with high-profile releases meant there was no queue or bot protection, just first come, first served. This release strategy practically guaranteed that the Halo Boot would resell.

Despite their popularity, many resellers missed out on this because they simply didn’t see it. While Wolverine does have a bit of history with limited time releases, they don’t command the same attention as a popular Nike or Yeezy release. Even resellers familiar with flipping shoes missed the sale, or simply gave up after seeing the limited quantities.

Was the Halo Boot a Good Flip?

Oh yeah, absolutely. Immediately following release, early sales were recorded at $400, meaning resellers profited $180 or more. Experienced resellers knew they had something big however, and would choose to hold until prices rose. April would see the first sale over $1000, and the price would hold more or less at that point through May and June.

The Wolverine x Halo: Master Chief Boot was a great item to resell. Retailing for $225, buyers could expect to flip the shoes for well over triple what they paid, and excellent return on investment for any reselling business.

Recent sales at the $600 mark are still very profitable, and selling online through platforms like eBay, StockX, and FaceBook Marketplace is easy. Even if a seller missed out on the higher prices seen in May, it still may be a good idea to hold on. Given the extreme rarity of the boot, these may end up going for thousands of dollars in the future.
